Last night two searchlights–
I had not seen such for years–
raked an empty sky.

Advertising what?
or were they really looking
for an airborne fiend?

Anachronistic?
Defending against the Blitz–
or promoting one.

Our life: mystery!
Asking us to make reasons
that we don't yet have.

As Mim used to say,
"If you need a reason then,
any one will do."

Do not lie awake
to unravel dreams or life.
Just tell their stories.

We live in a world
made by the stories we tell
about who we are.

Understanding comes
when another hears and nods,
reality shared.
