Story Principles for Non-Profits
Having an amazing mission is no longer enough for non-profits to attract and keep donors (unless you’re the only one addressing a particular cause).
Here are three Story principles to keep in mind as you grow your non-profit:
Frame your mission in a way that connects
This is especially important for non-profits tackling tough and emotional issues like childhood abuse. You have to shed light on the issue without making people feel afraid of the darkness.
Don’t just talk about your mission; talk about how you uniquely work towards it
Multiple non-profits are engaged in the same cause. This is great news for the cause, but it does create donor confusion, because everyone’s stated mission sounds the same. For that reason, you can’t simply talk about what you do; you need to showcase how you work towards your mission differently and uniquely.
Connect with people’s hearts, instead of trying to convince their minds
Facts and statistics are great, but they don’t go far in keeping donors engaged in the long run. Instead, choose to tell a story that invites people in and inspires them to journey with you till the finish line.
