Story Points Are Not Function Points!

Story Points are not Function Points!

We tried Function Points in the 80s & 90s already and they didn't work! Now many "Agile thought leaders" are just slapping a new name onto it and forcing the dev community to make the same mistake all over again!

What's the difference?

  • A Story Point is a relative measure: A team compares the complexity of an item with similar items they've done before.
  • A Function Point is an absolute measure: A Function Point is meant to have around the same level of complexity for work across multiple teams.

If the measure is just for the team's own consumption, it's a Story Point. If it's meant to be used outside of the team, it's a Function Point.

We're making the same mistake all over again. I'm looking at you, Dean Leffingwell.
