In the heart of the Orange Couty, a quaint office space housed the dreams and aspirations of two passionate founders, John and Alex. Their journey began several years ago, with just the two of them brainstorming in dimly lit coffee shops, their laptops glowing amidst the aroma of freshly brewed coffee. Their shared vision was to create a company that would leave a mark in the industry.
However, as the years passed, the duo felt an itch, a desire to expand their horizons. They envisioned a larger team, a bigger office, and a broader clientele. But there was a problem. While their dreams were vast and vivid, they lacked a clear roadmap to their destination. They knew they wanted to grow, but the question was, "How big?"
It was on a sunny afternoon when I first met them. The room was filled with the scent of pine and the soft hum of the air conditioner. As we delved into their aspirations, it became evident that they needed clarity. By the end of our first session, a 10-year target was set. It was like watching a painter finally see the picture he wanted to paint. The canvas was vast, but now they had a vision.
The next step was introspection. They began listing down every task, every role, and every responsibility they undertook. Papers were strewn everywhere, whiteboards filled with diagrams and flowcharts. It was a revelation. The two of them were juggling so many roles that tasks were slipping through the cracks. They needed a structure, a blueprint for their envisioned empire.
Drawing up an accountability chart, they plotted out 15 essential roles for their business's smooth functioning. It was overwhelming to see their names plastered across every role, from finance to marketing. The magnitude of their responsibilities was daunting, but it also painted a clear picture of the people power they needed to reach their 10-year goal.

Their first hire was crucial. They needed someone to manage the chaos, an administrative maestro. With a timeline in place, they meticulously planned out each hire, ensuring every individual would be the perfect fit for the role and the company culture. It was like assembling a jigsaw puzzle, each piece carefully chosen to fit perfectly.
Fast forward seven years and their once-quiet office was now buzzing with activity. The two founders, still at the helm, were now joined by a team of 13 dedicated individuals. Each person, handpicked and aligned with John and Alex's vision, contributed to the company's growth and success.
The journey wasn't easy, but with determination, a clear vision, and the right team, the company that once started as a dream in a coffee shop was now a force to be reckoned with in the industry.

1 年Great post, Will! Planning hires over a six-year period based on a 10-year target is a smart approach to business growth. By prioritizing structure first and people second, companies can ensure they have the right team in place to support their long-term goals. It's important to align hiring strategies with overall business objectives. Thanks for sharing this valuable insight!
