Story of Killing a Tiger...

Intro: As a development professional, we always learn, experience and share with others. The following story is improvised that was heard a long time ago from one of my functional supervisors in my career. Today I love to share my thoughts and hope you will get the insights relating to our daily and corporate life.

"Anandapur" is a hill village. Very nice environment. The wind blows. Plenty with chirping birds. From the top of the mountain comes the sound of the waterfall. The far-off sky with the mountain trees swaying. The people and the natural world are at peace. Every village family has a little bit of contentment and tranquility.

It used to be common for people to communicate their joy, grief, happiness, and sadness with one another. Every youngster in the hamlet, including the teenagers, plays fearlessly, attends school, and prays at night. And so each day was going smoothly for them.

One day, an unforeseen incident unexpectedly enters their lives. The village's chicks were all devoured by a vicious tiger. Thus, another day passed, and the ten to twenty ducks owned by a defenseless and impoverished elderly man disappeared. When the old guy realized this, he started crying and was at a loss for what to do.

As a result, the tiger devoured every goat and duck in the village every day. Goat and cow populations are likewise declining daily. Women and little children are afraid of the tiger. Bath time bothered even the women. Both men and women are unable to work well. Everyone in the village, including the little ones and the elderly, seems a little off. Everybody is afraid of something.

The headman of the village held an urgent conference for everyone involved in this circumstance. It was determined that, in order to save everyone in the community, the wicked tiger needed to be killed based on everyone's ideas and proposals.

"So who among us will kill the tiger?" the headman questioned each person individually at this point in the assembly. When he heard this, an elderly gentleman stated "I am old, I don't have much strength anymore, it would be better if you don't give me the responsibility of killing the tiger".

Another man remarked, "I live hand to mouth. I have an old mother and an only little daughter in my house. If I die while killing a tiger, what will happen to them?"

"I just got married two days ago; I haven't been able to go on a honeymoon yet" stated another recently wed man. “I can join the tiger-killing squad if I can return from my honeymoon."

A young man with a good-looking and fit physique stood in front of everyone and said, "Yes, if you allow me, I will kill the tiger," as everyone else was making up different justifications not to kill the animal out of fear of dying or for the sake of the family. The headman and the entire community were ecstatic to hear this and applauded with hand claps. Thus the plan was to take out that wicked tiger.

So the next day, everyone in the village saw that the young man went to the forest with various tools like - arrows, shields and spears to kill the tiger. After going there, the young man began doing various stunts and exercises, such climbing trees like Tarzan, lying down like an army, leaping, and running. He also began learning martial arts-style moves, similar to those seen in English films or Bengali romantic heroes, as well as other recognized and undiscovered moves.

Everyone in the village cheered upon seeing this and began to say, "This time, it's okay. There is no other option; the tiger must perish for us to resume our previous level of safety, fearlessness, and tranquility. It will be a lovely day and a lovely thing for children to be able to play and attend school as usual.

The villagers asked the young man, "Why don't you kill the tiger?" after a week or two of this. "I am taking a training," the young man retorted. “The course hasn't ended yet. Besides, killing a powerful, vicious tiger is not as simple as you may assume."

At this, the villagers responded, "All right, you ought to have adequate training. There is not much time. You have to kill fast. The village is no longer a place we can stay. A few days ago, a local child was abducted."

Consequently, a month turns into two months. There is no longer a tiger slaughter. The headman and the villagers convened another meeting in such a circumstance. "Why are you not killing the tiger?" the young man was asked. “What's taking the long time? We have high expectations for you, but we are not seeing any results," the young man retorted. "Please give me some more time; my training is almost over.? Only if and when the training is complete will I kill the tiger”. Upon hearing this, the entire community said, "Okay, you've been given one last chance."

Thus three months, six months and a year passed. The young man was no longer found in the forest and the tiger was not killed….leaving alone and no hope for villagers.

Again, after two or three years the young man returned to the village with a beautiful girl and everyone was staring at them….

Conclusion: What role does storytelling play in our lives? We should kill the Tiger. We are hired to kill the tiger. But the young man could not kill the tiger. That means, he did not do his job. He had many skills and willingness but by the course of time, he emphasized on unrelevant jobs. So, we frequently find ourselves unable to complete the tasks that are delegated to us or the work that we are allotted in a timely manner. Similar to the young man, we would rather stray from our own work and engage in different activities, such as working on unrelated projects outside of JD to appease the supervisors, working in other departments, demonstrating our expertise, etc. Therefore, we are unable to do our own task in time or meet the deadline, whereas our first task was "killing the tiger". It is also true that, while working in a team in the office, we cannot avoid assisting other, but we must do our assignment before anything else.

It goes beyond office job as well. This also frequently occurs in our private life. Thus, avoid taking on extra work. Always set an objective before each step. Think and list daily tasks and perform important tasks first.

So, it is our duty as parents, brothers and sisters, colleagues, or employees of a company to carry out the tasks assigned to us on time and not leave it unnecessarily. Be more responsible and accountable to self, family, and organization.
