The Story of JK Rowling

The Story of JK Rowling

Born in Chipping Sodbury, England, in 1965, Joanne Kathleen Rowling's journey into the realm of writing commenced at the tender age of six with a narrative titled ‘Rabbit’, albeit, a tale she never concluded.

Fast forward to the summer of 1990, aboard a delayed train from Manchester to London, the concept of a young boy discovering his wizardly identity unfolded in her mind. However, this spark of creativity took seven long years to morph into the pages of a book.

1990 was a year of contrasts; it witnessed the demise of her mother due to Multiple Sclerosis, compelling Rowling to venture to Portugal, teaching English as a means to navigate through her grief.

In the autumn of 1992, she intertwined her life with Jorge Arantes, a Portuguese television journalist. Yet, the union dissolved within eleven months. The marriage bore a single fruit - a daughter named Jessica.

The year 1993 saw Rowling bidding adieu to her husband and returning to the English shores. She now found herself grappling with the clutches of poverty and depression, dwelling in a compact flat in Edinburgh, striving to nurture her daughter on a slender welfare cheque of £70 per week.

With no means to warm her abode, the corners of cafés and the seats of buses became her refuge, where she penned down ‘Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone’ as her daughter slumbered in a pram.

Though the manuscript faced rejection from three British publishers - Penguin, Transworld, and HarperCollins, it found a home with Bloomsbury Children’s Books, who invested £10,000 for the rights to ‘Harry Potter and The Philosopher’s Stone’.

On the eve of 30 June, 1997, the Philosopher's Stone saw the light of day and was met with instant adoration. Published under her initials to appeal to a broader young male audience, Rowling's tale started weaving magic across borders.

A milestone was achieved at an Italian book fair later that year when Scholastic Books acquired the American rights for a hefty sum of $105,000, a rare feat for a budding children’s writer. The tale was introduced to the States in 1998 as ‘Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone’.

With the unveiling of ‘Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets’ in June 1999, and ‘Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban’ later that year, the magical journey continued. By 2000, the release of ‘Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire’ marked the series as a global marvel, with an initial print run of 1.5 million copies in the UK and 3.8 million in the US.

The turn of the millennium saw Rowling ascending as Britain’s highest-earning woman, amassing over £20.5 million. Her financial graph soared higher in 2001, with earnings estimated at over £24 million, placing her amidst the echelons of high-earning luminaries.

In October 1998, the cinematic rights to ‘Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone’ and its successor, were procured by Warner Brothers for $700,000. The cinematic rendition catapulted Rowling’s earnings beyond $100 million.

A prestigious OBE awarded by the Queen in March 2001 for her contributions to children’s literature adorned Rowling's journey.

Her saga underscores the essence of perseverance, even in the face of adversity. The world beholds Rowling as one of the most triumphant women, not merely for her innate talent but for her unwavering resolve to press forward amidst life's storms. Her narrative is a living testament to the power of choices, underscoring that the decisions we make, particularly to persevere, carve the path to our destiny.

A great writer and a very brave woman for speaking the uncomfortable truth!

No decent man would attack a woman. I was raised with traditional values and I will not budge for the degenerate and deluded alphabet marxists. Fully support JK Rowling for sticking to reality. If the alphabets use the new Scottish hate crime law (an oxymoron) to persecute this woman, they will as Churchill once said, reap the whirlwind of their degeneracy and have only themselves to blame.
