STORY IDEA: Start Your Own At-Home Child Care Business
In 1984, when I was 34 years old, I was looking for a way to stay home with my babies and still bring in a paycheck. Using my recently earned MBA in Finance, I thought I could supplement my husband’s income by starting some kind of financial services business from my kitchen. In a couple of years, my plan was to return to my position as an AT&T Account Executive - Industry Consultant. I had previously worked for XEROX.
My daughter, Katelyn, is now at the age that I was then and is expecting her second baby. She is facing a similar dilemma.
Going back to corporate America life never happened! I found that my entrepreneurial spirit kicked in. I loved taking care of kids in my home although I did not do it for very long. I found that I loved writing and speaking about how to start such a business.
I ended up writing a book which was titled Start Your Own At-Home Child Care Business in 1989. I was a guest on a variety of shows including CNN, Maury Povich, CNBC, Oprah, Sally Jessy Raphael, EWTN, The 700 Club, Financial News Network and other shows. Even did a 6 week national media tour for Doubleday who published the original edition.
I went on to write 13 more books. Doing the original book led to many other avenues opening up for me. I welcome the interview opportunity so that a whole new generation of parents can explore a possible solution to the dilemma of providing for your family at home vs. running out the door to work.
A new edition of the guide is now available with a new title “Home Child Care – How to Set Up a Fun and Successful Day Care Business in Your Own Home.” (What you need to know to advertise and promote your business, gather the right nursery equipment and toys, establish policies for payment and other practical matters, ideas for stimulating play and learn activities and more.)
Thank you very much.
