Sara Smith’s journey is a testament to the power of resilience, support, and determination. Hailing from Wood County, West Virginia, Sara has navigated numerous challenges, and her progress since joining the Jobs & Hope WV program in November 2021 showcases the transformative impact of a strong support system.
Overcoming Barriers Sara's path to success wasn’t easy. She faced barriers in education, employment, and expungement. However, with the help of Jobs & Hope WV and Legal Aid Attorney Marie Bechtel, Sara was able to secure an expungement of her criminal record. During the process, even Prosecutor Russell Skogstad expressed his amazement at Sara’s remarkable recovery, and he did not oppose the motion—an extraordinary achievement for Sara.
Leveraging Community Partnerships Sara’s progress wouldn’t have been possible without the support of key partnerships. Through PRSS Westbrook, she received financial assistance for work clothes and educational support from the West Virginia University at Parkersburg (WVUP) Foundation. Sara completed her Peer Recovery Support Specialist (PRSS) training through WVUP, which helped her not only transform her own life but also support others on their journeys.
Today, Sara works as a Case Manager at Harmony Ridge, an organization that empowers individuals in recovery. She also played a pivotal role in helping start the Quick Response Team at Westbrook, where she previously worked. Sara continues to give back to the recovery community by supporting other women as they navigate their paths to recovery and reentry.
Educational Milestones Education has been a key part of Sara’s journey. She is on the verge of completing her Bachelor’s degree at WVUP with honors and has already applied for a Master’s program at West Virginia University. Sara’s educational achievements reflect her relentless pursuit of growth, and her determination is an inspiration to others.
Services and Support from Jobs & Hope WV Throughout her time with Jobs & Hope WV, Sara accessed a variety of services, including work attire, educational support, employment opportunities, and legal assistance for her expungement. She was also inducted into the National Honor Society, recognizing her academic achievements and commitment to excellence.
