The Story of Hellen Syombua: How CMMB Kenya is Improving Access to Cancer Care

By Roy Mwangi. MPRSK

Access to timely cancer care can make the difference between life and death. In underserved regions, like Kitui County and its neighboring areas, the challenge of accessing specialized cancer treatment has long been a heartbreaking reality. Many residents have faced the difficult challenge of traveling hundreds of kilometers to major cities for cancer treatment— a journey that is often financially, physically, and emotionally draining. This lack of access has left? many cancer survivors without adequate diagnosis, resulting in advanced cancer stages and a reduced likelihood of survival.??

CMMB Kenya recognized the gap and took action. By constructing and equipping the Phangisile Mtshali Cancer Center in Kitui County, CMMB has provided a beacon of hope for patients, not just in Kitui but also in the nearby counties of Embu, Machakos, Makueni, and Murang’a. Since its establishment, the center has served 340 patients, making cancer care more accessible and providing vital services closer to home.?

The Phangisile Mtshali Cancer Centre has changed the lives of many people, including Hellen Syombua, a 40-year-old, breast cancer survivor and mother of five from Mwingi Central. In June 2023, Hellen discovered a small lump on her left breast. Initially, she sought treatment at Mwingi General Hospital, where she was given medication. However, the lump persisted and by December, it had progressed into a severe wound. Fearing the worst, Hellen returned to the hospital and was referred to the Phangisile Mtshali Cancer Center, a decision that would become pivotal in her cancer journey.?

On December 15, 2023, Hellen underwent a biopsy at the cancer center, and by January 2024, she received the devastating news—she had breast cancer. The diagnosis shook her, as she was the sole provider for her family after her husband lost his sight. Faced with an uncertain future and minimal support from her extended family, Hellen’s world seemed to crumble. Yet, through her faith and the unwavering support of her church and kind neighbors, she found strength to continue.?

The Phangisile Mtshali Cancer Center, built and equipped by CMMB, became a lifeline for Hellen. She underwent eight cycles of chemotherapy, and in her fourth cycle,? the tumor began to shrink.??

CMMB Kenya’s support extended beyond just medical care. Hellen was enrolled in a psychosocial support group for cancer survivors, where she found solace in sharing her story and hearing from others who had walked a similar path. "Listening to others’ stories, I realized that my pain, though immense, was small compared to what some had endured," Hellen reflects.?

CMMB also provided her with monthly cash transfers, crucial for covering her transportation, nutritional needs, health insurance, and lab costs. "Without CMMB’s help, I don’t know how I would have made it through," Hellen admits. CMMB’s approach—offering financial, emotional, and nutritional support—was critical in alleviating the stresses associated with her cancer journey.?

As the Phangisile Mtshali Cancer Center continues to serve patients across several counties, it is reducing the previously insurmountable barriers to cancer care. With the center in Kitui, women like Hellen no longer must travel hundreds of kilometers to access vital treatment. This proximity to care has led to earlier diagnoses and improved prognoses for many, giving families a renewed sense of hope.?

Today,? Hellen’s health has significantly improved. The tumor on her breast has shrunk, her stress has diminished, and she has regained the strength to take on daily tasks. Inspired by her experience, Hellen has become an advocate for early cancer detection. She regularly shares her story with other women, urging them to get screened and seek treatment early. "I never thought this could happen to me, but now I know the importance of early screening," she says.?

Her dream is to continue raising awareness about breast cancer, inspired by the exceptional care she received at the Phangisile Mtshali Cancer Center. Hellen’s journey is far from over, but with the unwavering support of her community and CMMB, she is determined to keep fighting.?

For patients like Hellen, CMMB Kenya has not only walked with them, but has also given them the strength to believe in a better tomorrow.?
