The Story of Effective Leadership (Part I)

The Story of Effective Leadership (Part I)

What if your team seems to be performing well but this just isn't coming across to the rest of the organisation?

A Real Life Scenario

This is based on a case study from March 2024, with a team who needed my help.

This leadership team - a significant part of a utilities business - had a quandary. They were doing a great job together but that just wasn't being communicated to the rest of the company.

Leadership styles

They had their own preferences about how to lead. And, for the most part, they worked well together, so that within the team those preferences led to a job well done. As far as they were concerned.

So far so good. They were happy with working together.

So what was missing? Was there, say, a blindspot?

Personalities at work

In our session, I took them through what we call a Teamscape session. This is where I took the Facet5 individual personality profiles they'd already seen and digested as individuals and threw them all together.

They were a good mix of determined, receptive, motivational, empathetic and astute leadership personalities.

Next I showed them how these profiles work together. In different scenarios. And this exercise revealed exactly what the issue was.

They were low on what we Facet5-ers identify as Control.

Simply, what this meant was that they were great at doing their work, they just weren't great at getting it done consistently and, most importantly communicating it consistently. Systematically, without issue, on time and on budget.

So we found the issue. What was the solution?

They didn't have the time nor the resource for another team member with high Control, so...

Solution

The team realised that they had to come up with the solution with the resources they already had. In other words, manufacture Control from the existing personalities in their team.

Working with Words

I gave them words like "Control", "Responsibility", "Discipline" and "Maturity" and asked them to interpret them using their known personality strengths.

The great thing was that, as they all had different and complimentary strengths, they all came up with different definitions. Different ways, that is, of looking at those words, according to their strengths.

And that gave them something meaningful for them to think about and action in the days ahead.

The team played to their strengths. And...

Today is Tuesday. This real life case study happened a week ago, Monday.

My PM came back with this yesterday
