Imagine a world without the modern touch-tone phone. Hard to picture, right? Let’s take a trip down memory lane to Bell Labs in the 1960s, where a groundbreaking innovation was born that revolutionized the way we communicate. ??

The Challenge

  • Cumbersome Rotary Dial: The rotary dial phone was outdated and slow.
  • Need for Efficiency: There was a pressing need for a faster, more efficient communication method.

The brilliant minds at Bell Labs, who saw an opportunity to transform the telecommunication landscape.

The Leadership through Idealized Design Approach

Leadership by Prof. Russell Ackoff: Prof. Ackoff led a team through a systems thinking process to address the challenge. Under the leadership of Prof Russel Ackoff, the group of engineers and decision maker grouped together for a systems thinking process.

The Task was to improve the age old (1800's) telephone design to suit it to the new age (1900's) aspirations and living standard.

Initial Approach: They thought of improving the part of the Telephone system by getting rid of redundant part to improve its efficiency. But it was discarded for the fear of unintended consequences and the systems thinking theory which said

"When you get rid of some thing you don’t want, you do not get what you want and you my get some thing much worse"

  1. The next initiative was to re design the whole system of Telephone
  2. As a part of that they listed what they think is needed by the user to experience a better calling experience
  3. They listed about 100 ides and things that can be worked up on
  4. Off the list, one input was that 'People hated when they take wrong numbers. People also hated when they dial a wrong number'
  5. A serious brainstorming was done and they finally arrived at the solution
  6. Replace the circular dial with a push button dial and a register which will register the numbers as the dial is pressed.
  7. The R&D department kicked in to check the viability and feasibility of the solution.
  8. After 2 months the staggering report came out from the R&D team where they got 2000 users to use the new push button dial system, and found the dial time has reduced by 12 seconds and the capacity of the telephone was increased by 20%. The 'wrong number' dialling issue has virtually got eliminated!
  9. And they Called this innovation as 'TOUCH-TONE'.

For the last over 70 years, this innovation has paved the way for all modern dialling systems in the world. Especially the Mobile phone revolution.
