The story behind Barhi Dates- “A healthy and tasty energy kick during exercise or at work!”

The word is out: Yex is going to sell Barhi dates! An exciting and challenging move, as most do not (yet) know this date in Europe. So why are we embarking on this adventure? And what are the benefits of these dates? Our commercial director Edwin tells you!

The beginning

A few weeks ago, our grower Athos came up with the idea of adding their Barhi Dates to our assortment, in addition to pomegranates, avocados, figs and golden berries. “We are constantly looking for new fresh fruits and vegetables to surprise European consumers. During one of our discovery trips in Peru, we found out that Barhi dates are absolutely fantastic! They pack a nice crunch, a sweet taste and they give you an energy kick! In fact, the Barhi date is also a delicious ingredient in recipes! The other day at the office, we had a quiche with the date as the main ingredient. Everyone raved about it! The decision was therefore quickly made… It simply had to be included in our assortment!” states Edwin enthusiastically.

In record time, the plan was put into action and soon the first boxes could be collected from our warehouse. Upon entering the office, most wanted to come and taste the new product immediately. And luckily, the reactions were positive! “It was such a relief when I heard that everyone liked the dates! On top of that, they are also super healthy, so it’s a total a win-win!”

?Surprising energy kick

The Barhi date is the ideal snack when you need that extra bit of energy. For example, during exercise, at work or just at home. “Often people get a boost from a banana, but the date offers a good substitute. It is a lot smaller and you can easily take it with you. Besides, you only have to throw away the pit instead of a whole banana peel. ?Although it might sound stupid, I have to admit that on multiple occasions, I may have forgotten a banana peel inside my bag for a bit too long, with all the consequences...”

Communication = key!

Barhi dates grow in large bunches on palm trees in Peru. There are many kilometres between Peru and our office in Poeldijk. Good communication is therefore of utmost importance!

“At Yex, we find personal contact incredibly valuable! To ensure this, we try to discuss a lot over the phone. The communication mainly goes through Whatsapp, e-mail, Teams and we regularly call our supplier. Every now and then, we pay a visit. During such a trip, our discoverers go to a particular destination. On different days, they visit the supplier and visit warehouses and fields together. Of course, during this trip there is also room for a lot of fun, because that is incredibly important to us! In the evening, we have a nice dinner together and while enjoying good food and a glass of wine or cold beer, we chat with each other.”

Looking to the future

At Yex, we like to dream. “The Bahri date is originally from the Middle East and in Europe we hardly know the product. How cool would it be if every European uses this piece of fruit as a snack when they need an energy kick!? I exercise a lot myself and I would really love to see other people who do sports have the Barhi date next to their water bottle.”
