The Story behind Ayurvedic Massage
Ayurvedic massage, also known as Abhyanga, is rooted in Ayurveda, the traditional system of medicine that originated in ancient India. The history of Ayurvedic massage can be traced back over 5,000 years.
In Ayurveda, the concept of massage is deeply intertwined with the principles of balancing the body's doshas (Vata, Pitta, and Kapha) to promote overall health and well-being. Ancient Ayurvedic texts, such as the Charaka Samhita and Sushruta Samhita, describe various massage techniques and the use of herbal oils for therapeutic purposes.
Ayurvedic massage continued to evolve through the centuries, influenced by different regions and cultural practices within India. The massage is designed not only to relax the body but also to stimulate vital energy points (marma points) and enhance the flow of prana (life force).
Today, Ayurvedic massage is a well-established practice within Ayurveda and has gained popularity worldwide for its holistic approach to health, incorporating herbal oils, specific strokes, and personalized treatments based on individual constitution and imbalances.
At the International Massage Associations World Championship in Massage, Ayurvedic massage is not a category, but it is done and given within especially the categories of Wellness Massage and Freestyle Massage (Eastern Inspired)
