The Story Behind... the Aquaknight RD65

Welcome to the first in a series of short blogs sharing the story behind some of our best‐selling proprietary products.

This month we focus on Roof Drains and our popular RD65.

The Situation:

For the year ending April 2021 ‐ townhouses, flats, and units accounted for 44% of all new homes consented in Auckland.*

This increasing trend towards higher density housing is resulting in smaller roof and balcony areas that in turn require smaller outlets.

Architects and engineers are thus calling for more specialised solutions that don’t compromise the waterproofing integrity of their projects.

The existing solutions:

Commonly available existing solutions are typically under‐engineered, leaving specifiers fearing they may not last the duration of a modern membrane warranty.

Our design‐led solution:

The design of our RD65 incorporates all the critical success features of New Zealand’s most specified Roof Drain, the RD100.

The design and manufacturing integrity of all our products then undergo extensive trials in our on‐site FlowLab** testing facility.

The test environment allows us to confirm the optimum grate configuration which is also balanced against installation and longevity requirements of modern single ply and mutli‐layer membranes.

The validation:

Firstly, Hydraulics Engineers are calling for precise, credible data to ensure compliance with the NZ building code. And for the first time, they have the rigour of our calibrated facility’s test‐data to incorporate into their calculations.

This in turn of course eases the pathway to compliance with Council.

And as you might expect the RD65 is now being specified by New Zealand’s leading Waterproofing Membrane suppliers.

*Townhouses, flats, and units accounted for around 44% of all new homes consented in Auckland for the year ended April 2021, and stand‐alone houses around 36%. (based on Stats NZ consents data here or also on the EBOSS blog).

**FlowLab is the only calibrated flow‐testing facility in NZ and provides precise test data.
