[Story No. 2] Sail Nauticus in Norfolk

[Story No. 2] Sail Nauticus in Norfolk

Set your course for 36.8478 -76.2958 and you'll arrive upon a unique waterfront scene. Bordered by the Battleship Wisconsin and the Half Moone cruise terminal -- Sail Nauticus is a community sailing center permanently moored along the banks of the Elizabeth River. The organization was founded in 2012 with a simple mission:

To impact the academic and leadership achievement of Hampton Roads youth through sailing and maritime sciences.

The facility is supported by local government, individual donations, and an adult membership program. These resources help subsidize youth programs which include a sailing academy during the academic year, and summer camps during breaks. In addition to these offerings, the dedicated staff also hosts team building events for companies and organizations in Hampton Roads.

A couple years ago, adult sailing memberships were first offered to the community and since then nearly 200 people have joined. The growing popularity can be seen on any given night from March to October as the colorful fleet of Harbor 20 boats glides by along the downtown Norfolk waterfront.

Membership rates start around $20/month for crew level which creates the perfect environment for people who want to explore sailing for the first time. The knowledgeable staff even offers learn to sail courses which allow beginners to quite literally learn the ropes. One notable aspect of the program is the sense of mentorship and growth which is evident through the membership structure. Every boat must be captained by an experienced sailor who meets specific knowledge and practical benchmarks.

The program really tries to build a sense of community; hosting member socials which offer a chance to network and meet new people. Additionally there are scheduled monthly potlucks, brewery visits, and the very popular annual oyster roast.

?Over the years, Sail Nauticus has continued to expand its program offerings. A prime example is the 2016 acquisition of the 122 foot Schooner Virginia -- a wooden replica of a 19th century pilot vessel. In the past the ship has offered sailings for both education and leisure trips around the Chesapeake Bay. For anyone who steps aboard, it's like taking a step back in time. From hoisting the main sail with 6-8 fellow sailors, to working lines into their resting position, an afternoon aboard will leave you with a real appreciation of maritime history along the East Coast.

Whether a seasoned captain or first time passenger, Sail Nauticus offers a great maritime resource in Hampton Roads. Want to learn how you can start sailing on the Elizabeth River? Check out their website.
