[Story No. 12] The Old Coast Guard Station, Always on Watch

[Story No. 12] The Old Coast Guard Station, Always on Watch

Over 100 years ago, a simple wooden structure was built along the southern coast of Virginia with a massive mission -- stand ready to rescue mariners on the unpredictable Atlantic Ocean. The Seatack station as it was known back then, has in recent years adopted a more common name.

The Old Coast Guard Station honors and preserves the history of Virginia's coastal communities and maritime heritage.

Ever since 1607 when English settlers first set foot on the sandy shores of Cape Henry, southeastern Virginia has had a rich maritime tradition. Whether a schooner sailing the Chesapeake Bay or steamer crossing 3,000 miles of open water on the Atlantic, if the boat floats, there's a good chance it has been through the port of Hampton Roads. It is only fitting that such a prime coastal location would be homebase to the Life Saving Service of the early 1900's.

Located on 24th Street at the Virginia Beach oceanfront, the facility is best recognized as the white barn with an iconic watch tower. Where brave "surfmen" once pushed their wooden rescue boat towards the roaring Atlantic, with oars in hand -- tourists now enjoy a grassy park that hosts concerts and festivals. Times may have changed, but The Old Coast Guard Station has certainly stood the test of time.

About the Series: Every week a local business or organization will be featured with the hope to tell their story here on LinkedIn. There are so many great restaurants, coffee shops, and retail venues in Hampton Roads that need a little help getting the word out to the public. The goal is to share a story, that will help people discover something new, whether a Downtown boutique or a beachfront bistro.
