Storms Rage Across the UK and the Despatch Box
As the country wakes on the morning after the night before a feeling of Groundhog Day descends on a nation that is no further down the line of Brexit than it was on June 24th 2016.
The dysfunction that exists over this, the most contentious of issues to have beset the UK since the days of the royalist cavaliers and the republican roundheads. But was Cromwell really a republican but a man who wanted freedom from unilateral rule without consent? Isn’t that what we’re facing today?
If anyone has thought that our parliamentary system has failed, you cannot be more mistaken; it shows that parliament can hold a government from doing something that is fundamentally flawed.
If we’re to naively assume that the European Union will act in good faith then the withdrawal agreement is an example of what we can expect when they hold all the cards; because ratifying the withdrawal agreement and political declaration would be handing the deck of cards over along with the billions leaving the UK with no leverage at all.
What baffles even more is the clamour from some corners to take no deal off the table; which is harakiri by any other name, again handing the advantage to the EU for no other reason than stall or thwart Brexit?
When you eliminate all that is possible, then whatever remains no matter how unlikely, is the logical conclusion.
Why hand over leverage?
To weaken the UK’s position!
What is the rationale for doing so?
To hand the advantage to the EU!
Who stands to gain from doing so?
Remain!
Is it in the national interest?
No!
Is it democratic to do such a thing?
Not if you agree with the referendum result!
Which of the two applies; Government In Name Only (GINO) or Democracy In Name Only (DINO)?
To Be Confirmed!
Are we on a an Orwellian precipice if we do not proceed with a no deal Brexit?
Is it time to face the fact that the EU will not hand out a fair and equitable deal because it’s not in their interest to do so?
Why?
Other member states may want the same thus bringing the existence of the European Union in its current guise into question!
What is to be done next?
Either a UK accepting vassalage within am unreformed EU; or a UK that stands alone free to do as its people determine through its elected executive and legislature; that have done so for centuries!
Is it time for proponents of taking no deal off the table to admit that they’re for UK vassalage?
Is sovereignty the cost of EU membership or freedom to ply our wares where we see fit?
Is the former a moot question as the country decided in 2016?
Are we to allow the boot of the European Union on the throat of the UK for decades to come?
Are we right to now view some parliamentarians as acting against the national interest and unwitting agents of a foreign power?
What can be the reason for ceding competitive advantage if they’re not?
