Storm Brings in the Big Guns

A multifaceted survey required experienced leadership during May, Senior Surveyor Laurence Washbrook lead this project to coordinate a topographic, mobile mapping & drainage survey. The project certainly tested Laurence's survey experience due to a combination of land access challenges and varying survey methods. Recognising the limitations of the data capture during the traditional manual survey, the team resourced the capabilities of the Trimble MX50 mobile mapping system. Working collaboratively with KOREC Group to produce a full point cloud of the survey extent. Discover the outcome in the case study.

River Channel Survey

Also this month, Storm Surveyors travelled to North Yorkshire to support a flood risk assessment study in Kirtlington, Bedale. River channel, structure and topographic survey data were required to build the Ladywell watercourse model. During the site works surveyors were faced with dramatic weather conditions and poor visibility due to overgrowth at this time of year but neither would impede the completion of work onsite. Storm Surveyors are trained, prepared and understand the need for adaptation and thinking outside of the box to collect and deliver robust data used for hydraulic modelling.

A hot topic of discussion during May was how Storm approach the issue of land owner access. River surveys are linear and will often traverse multiple landownerships. Gaining permission on land is fundamental to the critical path of the survey projects. To ensure surveyors can successfully complete the dataset needed and prevent any roadblocks due to access refusals, Storm directly contact every landowner effected by their surveys. This informs them of the survey to be undertaken, how invasive the surveyors will be and establish a trust in Storm Geomatics. One example here shows the beginning of the land access journey.

Ensuring Access on to private land holdings is critical for the success of a survey.
