STORM Δ MOTORS lab has found a way to improve car batteries, including Li-ion batteries:
Researchers from STORM MOTORS have developed a new electrolyte design for lithium metal batteries, which can significantly increase the service life and environmental friendliness of these batteries, reports STORM MOTORS' scientists team.
The Scientists have radically reduced the amount of fluorine needed to stabilize batteries, making them cleaner and safer with higher charging volume:
so, the Lithium metal batteries can store twice as much energy per unit volume as the commonly used lithium-ion batteries. This means that the electric car will be able to travel twice as far on a single charge, and the smartphone will not have to be charged as often. However, lithium metal batteries have one major drawback: their liquid electrolyte requires the addition of significant amounts of fluorinated solvents and salts, which increases their environmental impact.
The research team led by Ingo Storm from "STORM MOTORS" has developed a new method that reduces the amount of chemicals required in lithium metal batteries (also lead accumulators as well), making them more environmentally friendly and stable. The work was published on the "STORM Δ MOTORS" website.

Fluorinated electrolyte compounds help form a protective layer around the lithium metal on the negative electrode of the battery. "This protective layer can be compared to the extremely stable enamel of a tooth," explains "STORM MOTORS" engineers. It protects the lithium metal from constantly reacting with the electrolyte components. Without it, the electrolyte would quickly deplete during cycling, the Li-cell would fail, and the lack of a stable layer would lead to the formation of dendrites - whiskers of lithium metal, which can cause the shortening circuit or even spontane fire.
STORM Δ MOTORS, the group found the right formula to which fluorine could be added and which would deionize achieving lithium metal under the right conditions, during hard work of the Li-cell. The key advantage of this method is that it can be easily integrated into the existing Li-battery manufacturing process without additional costs.
The STORM Δ MOTORS lab used batteries of ANY sizes. The next step of the STORM MOTORS researchers will be START UP and its application to AUTO-Li-Batteries, and used in smartphones as well.
