Storing your Ride Step #3 the engine

Fogging the engine

What's fogging the engine mean? We'll if we are storing the car outside or in areas which are not text book and the car will be laid up for a long period we fog.

We do this by removing the spark plugs and pouring about 10 cc of fresh light oil down the hole. With the plugs removed we turn the engine over on the starer for about 2 seconds. Stand back, it makes a mess. I always place a rag over the plug holes to lessen the spray. Now put some of the oil or anti seize on the plug threads and wind them in by hand into position. No need to tighten down because we're going to clean them when we start the engine in spring. At this point start to make notes about what will need attention before the car goes back on the road. How's the drive belt, which bulbs are out, do we need air filters etc. Leave the note on the engine when you close the hood.

Now remove the battery, clean the terminals and seal with petroleum jelly. If the car has a theft proof radio make sure you have the code to unlock the unit before removing the battery. You can retrieve the code from the dealer , but , it's a real hassle.

Store the battery inside on a light trickle charge. By the way the wives tale is true... batteries sitting on a cement floor will go dead on their own. I know this for a fact.

One more thing, spray the engine down with a good preservative. I like to use Krown's  T32. remove any plastic shrouding and lightly coat the engine head and block assemblies.  Most engine are made of aluminum alloy and that stuff turns to powder when it rusts. We can always wash the engine bay in spring. Spray any open electrical connectors to avoid them turning green over the storage period.

Don't forget to coat the hood lock, cables and hinges....

Some great and valid suggestions, however the battery discharge "tale" on cement is technically unfounded. The only probable cause for lost efficiency is the cement floor may act as a heat sink, the colder, the less efficient the battery becomes, however the difference is negligible whether on wood, steel or cement.
