In my two-decade-long career, I have observed individuals making various career moves and pivots.
What I've come to realize is that there is no single right answer on this topic.
For instance, some top leaders, like Chandrasekaran, the Group CEO of TATA Sons, began their careers at TATA and have remained there throughout their entire professional journey, ultimately reaching the top position in the same firm.
On the other extreme, I know of individuals who have broken the mold, transitioning from corporate jobs to entrepreneurship or pursuing creative paths such as becoming artists, YouTubers, or authors.
I know of a Founder of a consulting firm who, due to his passion for spirituality, has taken up a service position in a spiritual organization.
Some professionals choose to leverage their core strengths in a specific function and make transitions across multiple industries.
Take, for example, Piali Dasgupta , the Senior VP of Marketing at Columbia Communities, who has navigated intriguing career pivots.
I had a long and insightful chat with Piali last week.
She embarked on her professional journey as a journalist with The Times of India, later transitioning into marketing roles with e-commerce giants like Myntra and Amazon.
Notably, she made a captivating move into advertising as the Creative Director for Publicis Groupe. Currently, Piali holds the position of Senior Vice President of Marketing at Columbia Pacific Communities, India's largest senior living community operator.
What stands out about Piali's career trajectory is her ability to leverage her strengths in communication and storytelling across diverse domains.
She has adeptly ascended the career ladder, culminating in her current role as Senior Vice President of Marketing, transitioning from a background in journalism.
Similarly, Saurabh Bajaj - Practical Marketer , a friend and fellow marketer, successfully transitioned from FMCG product brands like Britannia Industries, Diageo, and Mondelez (Cadbury) to Vodafone Idea, a service-oriented industry.
During our last conversation, he shared insights into the massive shift in marketing dynamics between FMCG and service companies.

Saurabh emphasized that this pivot has provided him with a deeper understanding of the retention side of marketing and the importance of customer experience in business growth.
On a personal note, I have applied my marketing and brand strategy skills across multiple industries, ranging from real estate to retail to healthcare.
In 2018, I made a significant pivot as an author, supplementing my consulting and speaking profession.
Key Takeaways: Finding Your Path in a Diverse Career Landscape
The stories that we saw underscore several key takeaways for navigating a successful career:
1.???? Leverage Core Strengths: Identify your innate strengths and leverage them across diverse industries.
2.???? Continuous Learning: Embrace lifelong learning to stay adaptable and relevant in an ever-changing professional landscape.
3.???? Cross-Industry Expertise: Whether staying within one industry or venturing into multiple sectors, gaining expertise in diverse areas can be invaluable.
4.???? Responding to the Calling: Sometimes, a significant life incident or a sense of purpose can lead to transformative career shifts.
In conclusion, the career journey is inherently personal, and there is no one-size-fits-all approach.
The key lies in understanding our motivations, embracing change, and being open to the unexpected turns that may lead to fulfilling and successful professional trajectories.
