Legendary speakers like Brene Brown or Simon Sinek offer audiences life-changing lessons stemming from experiences, while mediocre speakers deliver presentations that are quickly forgotten.?
Consider this:?legendary speakers evoke emotions in their audience members, prompting them to?TALL?(Think, Act, Laugh, and Learn), which helps the audience remember the speech – precisely what you want for maximum effect with stories.
What do legendary speakers have in common?
They have a?clear message?and use a?variety of stories?throughout their speech. Not only that, but they have a strategy for how to deliver their stories and where to place them in their speech.
It’s not just about telling stories, but also about how they’re told.
Don’t know how to tell a story? Then I’ve got some wonderful news for you! I’m working on an online workshop for you that will walk you through the process of creating award-winning stories step-by-step.
Can you imagine how much success you could have if you implemented a strategy for not only delivering your speech but also delivering your stories?
Before you even consider the structure of your stories though, you’ll need something I call a?story stash, which will allow you to select and choose from a variety of stories based on the message of your speech.
Have you seen my new course, The Fearless Speaker’s Toolkit: Come Alive and Thrive in the Spotlight? In this course, I will go deeper into the topics of increasing your confidence, imposter syndrome, and learning how to say no.
Keep in mind, the more you speak:
If your first thought is, “I have no stories, my life is not that interesting”, I got you.
Here are some ideas for where to find your own stories for your award-winning speeches:
Stories of Overcoming Difficulties
#1 Go back to a time in your life that you?completely disconnected?from your mind.?
That’s right.?That shadowy nook in the back. That’s where your most powerful stories will be found.
#2 Think about times when you have?wronged?someone or they have wronged you.?What did you realize during that time?
#3 Can you remember an embarrassing story? This can range from school activities to family gatherings. The more embarrassing, the better –?how did you handle it?
#4 Go back to the?painful moments?in your life. I know it hurts, but it’s necessary to go through the difficult times in life because that’s where you will find your most powerful messages. Consider these questions:??
Stories of Joy and Inspiration
#1 Think about your biggest?accomplishments?– the times when you were most proud of yourself.?How did you overcome that stumbling block or struggle?
#2 Consider your?turning points. What events in your past influenced your life the most? Consider events, books, moments, people, and anything else you can think of.
#3 Do you have any?hilarious?stories that still make you laugh when you think about them??Not going to lie, that hyppo story made me laugh when I started thinking of it for my list email.?
#4 Consider any times when a situation that seemed terrible turned into a positive moment.?What were your thoughts and actions?
