Q3 2024: Solid results, stable foundations

Our third quarter 2024 results are here! We delivered solid results despite a challenging market, with group sales of EUR 8.6 billion and strong operating cash flow — all thanks to the hard work and commitment of our team.

This quarter saw our Chemicals business continue to bounce back, driven by stronger earnings and growth in Borealis’ polyolefin business. Our focus on specialty products and innovation is paying off, with our joint ventures Borouge and BAYSTAR making significant contributions.

This quarter also saw progress on our decarbonization path with the signing of two new Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) in collaboration with VERBUND and ImWind . These agreements secure 67 GWh of renewable energy per year for our operations, marking an important step toward reducing our carbon footprint and achieving our long-term sustainability goals.

These solid Q3 results provide the foundation we need to keep delivering on our Strategy 2030 and supporting our transformation into an integrated sustainable chemicals, fuels and energy company.

Less waste, more future: Sort, recycle, repeat

There’s no shortage of plastic waste in the world — but sourcing suitable feedstock for recycling remains a challenge. But why? Well, not all waste is created equal. Depending on the type and source, plastic waste goes through different collection and sorting processes, and not all of it can be recycled using current methods.

For our ReOil? chemical recycling plants, we need a large volume — up to 260,000 metric tons — of end-of-life plastic? that isn’t suitable for mechanical recycling. To secure this feedstock, we’re partnering with Interzero , Europe’s leader in sorting lightweight packaging waste. Together, we’re establishing Europe’s largest sorting facility, where we’ll transform the mixed plastics left over after sorting lightweight packaging into valuable feedstock for chemical recycling, helping to drive the circular economy for plastics.

OMV at ADIPEC 2024: Collaborating to drive the energy transition

This week at ADIPEC Exhibition and Conference 2024, the world’s largest energy exhibition, we joined over 180,000 industry professionals in Abu Dhabi to discuss the role of energy in driving economy-wide transformation and sustainable growth.

We shared how we’re harnessing the potential of AI to power our sustainable transformation. From optimizing our carbon capture and storage projects to improving operational efficiency, AI is a critical tool that’s helping us reduce our CO2 emissions and accelerate innovation.

We also highlighted our commitment to energy security and the transition to cleaner fuels, including our investment in Neptun Deep—the largest natural gas project in the Romanian Black Sea. With 40–50% of our annual investments dedicated to sustainable projects through 2030, we’re actively driving sustainability across all business segments.

What’s important now is speed. Change can't happen overnight—and, looking at the pace of the energy transition today, there’s no time to waste. We need everyone and every available technology on board. Let’s move together, and let’s move fast.
