STORIES FROM THE STAGE
Welcome to the final edition of "Stories From The Stage," a limited series newsletter designed to offer a peek inside JAKE Small's TEDxRoxbury 2024 journey. This newsletter features some of JAKE's favorite TED talks as well as advice for those who aspire to take the TEDx stage one day.
?? Check Out The Talks
1. Reclaiming the outdoors: We outside! | Eunyque Sykes | TEDxRoxbury
Outdoor experiences are not just in the wilderness or only meant for a certain group, but are a part of everyday life in the city, especially for Black communities, bringing empowerment, well-being, and a need to rethink how we view urban and outdoor spaces for a more inclusive society.
2. Self Care... Is NOT the Answer | Kurt Faustin | TEDxRoxbury
Our inability to cope with trauma in a healthy manner requires a paradigm shift that self-care routines, self-help books, and catchy social media quotes alone do not fully address. Community care is the missing link to self-care and the healing journey.
3. How to teach Black boys they matter | JAKE Small ????? | TEDxRoxbury
Blackness needs to matter to non-Black communities before we can make transformative and sustained progress towards antiracism.
4. Imperfecta: A Latina Mental Health Journey | Alejandra Ramos Gómez | TEDxRoxbury
Our communities are spaces of authentic learning, and we deserve to be in spaces where we can safely participate in dialogue and redefine how to navigate our mental health journeys through culturally responsive practices.
5. Fighting youth homelessness with community care | Asjah Monroe | TEDxRoxbury
Youth homelessness is a hidden crisis, but the solution is so close to home.
6. How to support healthcare workers | Lucy Lomas | TEDxRoxbury
Our current healthcare system does not adequately treat chronic health conditions and ignores the humanism of patients and healthcare workers. A solution to our country’s healthcare crisis is a holistic approach that focuses on prevention, education and patient empowerment and addresses the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual well-being of patients and healthcare workers.
7. Why Not Me: Claiming Your Spot in Local Politics | Kristen L. Pope | TEDxRoxbury
Every day, decisions are made by elected leaders and people in power. Black people can’t afford to not be involved in politics. We must claim our seat at the table and take care of our civic well being.

8. How mentorship can lessen workplace racism | Ashley Alexander | TEDxRoxbury
Black female mentorship in the workforce is a catalyst for innovation and progress, while the eradication of gatekeeping within the Black community is crucial for fostering inclusivity and unlocking collective success.
9. A 4-ingredient recipe for success and self-care | Carmen Blyden, MBA | TEDxRoxbury
If more people adopted the belief that self-care should be viewed as a tool for achieving their goals rather than a reward for success, it would bring about transformative changes in their lives and communities.
10. Pain to Purpose | Mathematics | TEDxRoxbury
We aren’t responsible for our trauma, addiction, or alcoholism but we are responsible for our healing. Recovery is possible because the phrase "once an addict, always an addict," does not tell a full and accurate story.
11. Reclaiming wellbeing in the workplace | Dr. Charmain Jackman, Ph.D. | TEDxRoxbury
Mental health professionals experience racial trauma in the workplace. We often say that "Black don't crack" but it's time we start to address the impact of racial trauma and weathering on our mental health and wellbeing.
*I also want to acknowledge my TEDxRoxbury cohort mates whose videos are not yet out, Valerie Foxx and Nashira Baril . Stay tuned! ??
