Stories from ADC22 - Part 3

Building audio products, communities, sonic experiences, and a bit more. I promote budding talents & ideas ??
TL;DR: Actually you know what, you might wanna go through this one in detail as it has some relevant FYIs for the future.
First things first, go read Part 1 & Part 2 if you haven't already. I've been told that they are written really well and that I should consider copywriting roles. No kidding.
Welcome back! Do you ever miss being a student? Yea yea we are all "lifelong learners" and all that, but I'm talking about the golden time when you get to attend lectures with people who are in the same headspace as you are, and go deep into learning something without worrying about time or customers or support emails or marketing!
And everyone you meet is always eager to teach you something, give a piece of advice – whether you need it or not. Lol. Still, it all eventually helps shape your thoughts and mindset.
#ADC22 brought a glimpse of that back for me when I met the future of the audio industry – university & college students who have been doing their masters, undergraduate or PhDs in a variety of subdomains. Thinking outside the box. Trying to do things differently. Experimenting.
In the 2 days that I got to interact with these passionate bunch, I kind of relived a lot of my own memories.
While education cannot be made free to be really honest, there could be steps taken to at least make it easier to search. I have some kind of bias when it comes to access to information. And this bias could be because of the fact that I've myself spent a lot of time in searching for resources, only to end up at dead-ends and restart the whole process again. India has lacked an ecosystem to support this (but all that is going to change soon – stay tuned)
The moment I realised that the volunteers at ADC 22 were mostly students, I was overjoyed about that than I was about the brilliant workshops that were ahead of me to attend. While I exchanged ideas with industry veterans (who were all so open to guide me), I tried and spent a good amount of time with the volunteers. I felt like I need to give them as much information as I can, because I know what it is like to not have the right kind of access to any.
ADC22 Volunteers (in no specific order): Katharina Pollack Matthew Rice Julian Lenz Cormac Crehan Mitchell McDermott Maria M.
(I know I haven't been able to tag all of the volunteers in this article. In case you are connected with them on LinkedIn, please do tag them in the comments)
Every day after the workshops concluded, I joined them at the bar to understand their vision (we were all sober so I really mean 'vision' in a good way here). And I can tell, the audio industry has some amazing stuff coming its way. It's only a matter of time! Some aiming to create never-seen-before iOS apps, others understanding the roles of product owner.

The volunteers had ideas that most people would overlook or not consider, but something that would reveal a lot of potential. I'll let their work talk more in the coming few years.
On that note, I'm glad that every year, events like the Audio Developer Conference sponsor students so finances don't become a hurdle for them to miss out on opportunities and I'm looking forward to making that happen in India, starting with building the right sources of information (more on this in a few weeks)
While we are talking about learning, the videos from ADC22 are coming soon on their official YouTube channel , starting with this brilliant talk about building instruments by Astrid Bin
I absolutely loved this presentation mainly because it's beyond the tech. It's a story about passion, aesthetics and a journey that you can take to build that one thing you've always wanted to. You'll find some interesting anecdotes that are as wise as they come.
If you couldn't attend it in November 2022, now is your chance to learn everything that was presented at the event here: ADC22 YouTube Playlist
And, in case you didn't already know, #ADC23 is scheduled for November 13th - November 15th 2023.
Follow for more such stories and info about a bunch of stuff I'm involved in.
