First, go check out the previous story so I don't have to re-type the whole introduction here.
Before we begin:
How many datasets does it take to change a light bulb?
One, but there's no consent for it!
(IYKYK. Hint: It's an ML joke)
Now, have you ever been on stage facing an audience? Some people have stage fright and shiver in such situations, and it's completely OK to be so (I'm saying this to myself). Some are as comfortable as sitting in their own living rooms, confident and in control.
Let's add a few variables to this scenario. How about you get 5 minutes (hard limit) to get on the stage, do your thing and keep it good. Still easy? Ok, let's add some more.
You have 5 minutes within which you have to setup your laptop, adjust the lighting, get a volunteer from the audience and showcase one of the most complicated performances.
Great. Now that you understand the context, ADC 22 had a superb concept of Open Mic, a platform to let attendees present something that they couldn't as part of the main event, or talk about something different altogether. They were given 5 minutes each so that everyone could get a chance.
A few of us signed up for it and our performances ranged from some superb workarounds to slip in VST3 and AAX in Apple Store-hosted plugins, to realtime music collaboration with iPhones, to some casual standup comedy by someone, to a lot of good music and more.

One of the performances was about creating sounds from laser. What?!
Cormac Crehan made a cool patch in Cycling '74 's Max that allows you to use light to control sound. This is already a complex setup when done at home, let alone perform on stage. Due to the technicalities involved and the limitations of bringing it all on stage in a short time, the audience didn't really get to see it in all its glory.
(Read the next part in Pete Goodliffe 's voice & style, the host of Open Mic)
So, today, to wrap up ADC 22 with this kind-of-pending performance, let's give a round of applause to Cormac as he does magic with lasers.
On that note, Cormac and his friends are doing a live show on 15th December 2022 in London, which you should check out at: Musin at 21Soho – Tickets selling out!
A lot more stories from the event are on their way.
