StorageCraft's ShadowStream Replication

I'm often asked, "When should I use ShadowStream replication over iFTP?"

A very good question since StorageCraft's ShadowStream replication comes at a premium over the included (free) iFTP replication. In short (if you're not already familiar with ShadowStream), StorageCraft's ShadowStream makes use of the UDP-based Data Transfer protocol (UDT).

The quick and easy is that if any combination of the following 3 points are true, ShadowStream is a good candidate:

  • High bandwidth network connection
  • Long distance, high latency network connection
  • High packet loss

Some time ago, we put together a whitepaper on our ShadowStream replication. Please reference the link below for further detailed information:

Rich, Thanks for the article. We migrated over 100 replicating server from Shadow stream over to IFTP and have not looked back. Spread across each location, we've noticed no true advantage with Shadowstream over IFTP. We also noticed a tremendous saving with licenses with SST. We have the capability of of getting a more overall network analytic view to our data center with move as well.
