Storage Solutions For Your Videos
Hello All -
After you shot a number of videos, even short ones, and converted them to MP4s for display on the Internet, you will notice that they are starting to take up a lot of space on your computer. Even though disc space is cheap these days, I find there is never enough. Eventually you will want to take your videos off your computer and park them somewhere else for long-term storage.
I found a lot of information for today's article here:
You can go crazy with storage solutions, but don't. Here are a few simple ideas.
Cloud storage: Google Drive, Drop Box, and others provide Gigs of storage for a monthly fee. The advantage here is if you suffer a catastrophe (fire, earthquake), your footage is safe and sound. The downside is monthly fees can add up, to access your footage you need Internet access, and still, if you shoot a lot of video or shoot in 4K (or higher), you still need a boat-load of cloud-based storage.
Local storage: A device attached to your computer (network attached storage [NAS]) is an easy, affordable idea. This is essentially a box designed to hold multiple hard drives. You can purchase a NAS pre-populated with hard drives or add them on the go. One thing to be aware of is that they are still disaster and theft prone.
Perhaps the easiest idea is a portable drive. I was in a big-box retailer today and saw an 8TB portable drive for $150. For those of you not good with big numbers 8TB is eight thousand Gigs of room. Even for me, 8TB is enough breathing room for a while. Be sure to stash it in a secure place.
The big take away here: You work hard on your videos and computer drives crash every day. Have a backup plan and stick to it.

In other news, over the summer I had the pleasure to film a fund raising event for Open Doors to Future Possibilities.
They are a worthy nonprofit and you can see that video here:
