Seagate Doubles 18Tb Disk's Data Transfer Speed

Seagate has added a second read/write head to its Exos 16 and 18TB disk drives, more than doubling their data transfer speed.

It dubs this its Mach2 actuator technology, an actuator being a read/write head. The actuators are divided into two sets, with each applying to half the platters in the disks and capable of operating independently from the other set. Seagate has not made a formal announcement about this but the drive has sprung up in its product website pages...?more

Seagate Exos 2X18 Dual-Actuator HDD Line Gets An Upgrade

Seagate has updated its lineup of dual-actuator hard drives (named MACH.2) with the Seagate Exos 2X18.

First shipped in 2019, these HDDs owe their speedy performance to its twin actuators via the MACH.2 technology, quoting up to double the performance of competing enterprise single-actuator 3.5-inch hard drives. Security Boulevard: Securing Open Source (Nov. 28th)

In this editorial webinar, we'll examine the current state of application security, the challenges associated with ensuring code is free of vulnerabilities and explore some of the best practices organizations can take to shift security further left in the software development life cycle.

There is increasing focus on the security of open source software in the wake of a series of high-profile breaches involving software supply chains. As most, if not all, applications developed today use some form of open source code, the concern is that a bad actor will contribute code loaded with malware to a widely-used project...?more

How AI Has Made Hardware Interesting Again

Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory has long been one of the world's largest consumers of supercomputing capacity. With computing power of more than 200 petaflops, or 200 billion floating-point operations per second, the U.S. Department of Energy-operated institution runs supercomputers from every major U.S. manufacturer.

For the past two years, that lineup has included two newcomers: Cerebras Systems Inc. and SambaNova Systems Inc. The two startups, which have collectively raised more than $1.8 billion in funding, are attempting to upend a market that has been dominated so far by off-the-shelf x86 central processing units and graphics processing units with hardware that's purpose-built for use in artificial intelligence model development and inference processing to run those models. ...?more
