Storable Book Club: Invisible Women

Storable Book Club: Invisible Women

An interview with ERG lead, Nicole Z. , on her selection of Invisible Women for Storable's Book Club.

Q: What initially drew you to this book?

A: I heard about it while scrolling through social media and it immediately spoke to me as a woman in tech and I wanted to be more educated on the current gender gap as we hear more and more that "it's closing". This book proved that while it is better than in the 20th century, there are some areas where the gap is growing and others that only appear to be improved.

Q: Did reading "Invisible Women" change your perspective on any particular issue or aspect of your daily life?

A: Yes! Especially in my daily conversations with loved ones and how I view my life as a consumer. I also started noticing some of the items the book pointed out that were unknown to me like mobile phones' voice-to-text features having a harder time picking up higher register voices. I am also now aware of the increased danger to women behind the wheel of a car. I make sure to adjust my seat and seatbelt position the best I can to account for the known weaknesses in car design for women.

Q: Why do you think this book was important to share with your colleagues?

A: We work in such a diverse company with overseas offices and hundreds of colleagues of different backgrounds. We also all know at least one woman, or identify as one ourselves, so these concepts cannot stay foreign to us. Women today are the mothers, sisters, wives, daughters, teachers, neighbors, and future female leaders of organizations all over the world. We all need to know how to better advocate for women and we need to know where to reinforce and correct this system built for men.
