Stora Enso has partnered with Northvolt to develop wood-based batteries

Stora Enso and Northvolt have started working jointly to create sustainable batteries using lignin-based hard carbon produced with renewable wood. Stora Enso has developed Lignode?, a lignin-based material, which will be used as anode raw materials. Stora Enso has been producing lignin since 2015 with a current production capacity of 50,000 tons at their production site in Finland. Recently, Northvolt has made announcement to build a lithium-ion battery production plant with 60 GWh of annual manufacturing capacity, which is expected to start in 2025.

The battery market is growing rapidly to meet the requirement from mobility to stationary energy storage. The use of sustainable materials as a source for anode raw material will reduce both the carbon footprint and the cost and boost the European battery value chain.
