Stopping to learn is the start of dying...

#careerdevelopment #careerenrichment #careercoach #northstar #principlescentered #NoFearofFailure #tyrannyoftheladder #squigglycareer

Is career a straight line, a maze, or a squiggly or all of them....

My personal experience tells me that both life and work are not straight lines.

Hence its important NOT to get trapped in the tyranny of "staircase career"

At the beginning any career progression appears to mean that moving to the next step in the upward staircase of career is important. Unfortunately, its not true. Simple reason, there is no upward staircase. Period.

Please watch the Ted Talk below to understand how a promising career can be built by jumping off the staircase mindset right into a squiggly!

And closer home, In India, someone has successfully navigated the squiggly and has become an amazing human being who is a ballerina, martial artist, educator, environmental enthusiast and an entrepreneur all rolled into one...while being a successful mother! Meet Ms Gitanjali JB through her Ted Talk

What makes it possible for everyone? It is overcoming the fear of failure.

Please listen Tom Peters, author, management thinker, and excellence hunter, who is renowned for his straight talk.

Excellence is a mindset and journey that requires the paradigm of lifelong learning. Lifelong learning is possible if there is humility.

A Sanskrit shloka from Vedas captures this succinctly

Education gives humility. It is the intellectual humility that tells us that there is more to learn.

From humility arises the qualification to hold a position of service to others. Qualifications are not those diplomas and certificates that adorn the walls or desks. It is the innate quality to put the knowledge gained to serve - serve others, a community, an organization or world at large.

This position of service leads to wealth - material, intellectual, emotional and spiritual wealth that serve others.

From this diverse wealth comes the right conduct - conduct of life and work, which in turn leads to a lasting happiness.

If the North Star of a career is to honestly add value to the universe, we will pursue learning that fulfills this. This means career gets shaped by the north star principles we choose. It could be a straight line or a squiggle. It doesn't matter. What matters is learning by doing, failing, and doing again and moving on without stop.

A rich career is the one that has enriched others in many different ways.

What is your north star!
