Stop Worrying About Keywords And Get More Job Interviews

Many job seekers concentrate on the wrong things to get more interviews, like trying to guess the right keywords.

Keywords aren't going to get you interviews, much less offers.

There are far more effective ways to get more interviews than keywords ... here's why:

  1. If You Get Through The ATS, You Still Only Have A 15% Chance Of Landing An Interview:?Keywords don't determine which candidates get interviews. Most employers ATSs shortlist 50 resumes, to fill roughly 7 interview spots (so 15% of candidates who get through the ATS actually get interviews). HR/Recruiters recommend candidates for interview, the hiring manager chooses a few, and HR fills the remaining spots for low quality interviews (like compliance and comparison interviews).
  2. Most Candidates Base Keyword Choices On Job Descriptions:?Job descriptions are standardized in medium/large companies, so they don't reflect the hiring manager's current individual needs. For replacement positions, the job description is usually recycled by the departing employee. For new headcounts, the job description was established when the position was approved during the company's budget process (usually more than a year ago). So, the job description you're using to guess keywords doesn't reflect the hiring manager's current individual needs - It's inadequate to guess keywords.
  3. JobScan Rarely Helps:?AI word cloud tools like JobScan are supposed to identity the most important words in a job description, giving a menu of keywords. But since the input to JobScan doesn't reflect the hiring manager's current individual needs, how can it return the right keywords to match search criteria?
  4. Avoiding The Online Applications:?Avoiding online applications helps you avoid ATSs, rather than trying to guess keywords to get through it. In addition, 80% of new hires were not identified through job boards, company websites, LinkedIn or other online applications, according to 2 major job boards.

Since they're aren't any jobs that involve keyword guessing, it's no wonder that employers don't base interview or hiring decisions on how good you are at guessing them.
