Stop Work Burnout! 5 Tips to Recharge & Re-energize Your Career

I describe burnout as being so completely and utterly depleted and exhausted that you lose yourself.  You are aware that you are experiencing this but you don’t see a way forward out of the feeling.  You have no energy, moments of joy are fleeting, you long for time to rest but it always seems a little out of reach.  You start to avoid doing simple things or you procrastinate over things that you know you need to do.  One of my big warning signs of burnout is procrastination.  In an effort to make sense of what we are experiencing our brains look for things that feel easier and avoid what feels hard.

  • Sacrificing important self-care practices in exchange for the busy and hustle of working life.  
  • Not taking time to systematically renew and recharge in areas you need it.
  • Not truly taking a break from being fully connected and accessible.
  • Not prioritizing basic human needs like nutrition, hydration, sleep and movement.
  • Not enjoying where you are and letting yourself lean into the desire to enjoy what you do and instead putting off the enjoyment for a fantastical time somewhere off in the future that never comes.

  1. Fill your buckets.  Identify 4-5 areas of your life that enrich you and are important to you.  Then find ways systemically to fill those buckets on a daily/weekly basis.  Examples could be health, relationships, career, spirituality/faith.  What could you do on a systematic basis to keep these buckets full?  Identify practical things you can start doing now.
  2. Fall back in love with what you do and find the joy in it.  Often people experience burnout when they no longer feel joy in what they do.  Fall back in love with your job/career.  Find small things every day that you enjoy or that you are good at and celebrate that.  Think of how you felt when you first started in the job.  The excitement and anticipation you felt.  Look for that in your current job and appreciate the things you may be taking for granted.
  3. Find Your Purpose.  It may be in your work or it may be outside of work.  If you feel driven by your purpose then you look at your work with a different lens.  Maybe the projects that usually deplete you feel different when you know they are moving you towards fulfilling your purpose.  If you can’t find your purpose at work then know that your work may be enabling you to fulfill it outside.  Perhaps it allows you to volunteer your time/resources or it gives you the freedom to pursue a new interest.
  4. Seek out a community.  Know you are not alone.  The struggles and worries you face are not unique to you.  Find a group of people who are similarly situated and who you trust and lean into that community.  We are stronger when we have others around us to lift us up and remind us that we don’t have to carry the burden alone.  It may be a professional group, a working parents group, an exercise group, or an alumni group.  The key is trust, honesty and vulnerability as a community.
  5. Seek the help of a coach or a therapist.  Know that asking for help is brave.  Know that the most successful people in the world including business people and professional athletes do not do it alone.  They hire coaches and therapists to help them work through areas they want to improve.  This is a lifelong journey of improvement and development and having a coach to help carry you along the way makes the journey a little less bumpy and a lot more enjoyable.
