Stop Wasting Time on Theories: Real Leadership Comes from Action

I’m Christine Hernandez, founder of Impact Initiative, and I’m here to give it to you straight—traditional leadership courses aren’t cutting it. I’ve been there. I’ve sat in those classrooms, taken those trainings, and walked out feeling like, “Now what?” Theories and models don’t get you anywhere unless you know how to use them. You need more than concepts—you need real-world experience.

Here’s the reality—58% of managers don’t receive any training before they’re thrown into leadership roles. Think about that. No roadmap, no direction, just a title and the expectation that you’ll figure it out. And even if you do get into one of those “leadership development” programs, 70% of employees say they still weren’t prepared for the actual challenges of leadership. You know why? Because sitting in a classroom talking about leadership is not the same as leading.

I’ve been on that side too. You leave with all these great ideas in your head, but when the pressure’s on and your team is looking to you, theory alone won’t save you. 63% of millennials—our up-and-coming leaders—are telling us loud and clear that the leadership programs they’ve been through aren’t getting the job done. That’s because these programs are stuck on theory and missing the most critical part—application.

I Know Because I’ve Been There

I’ve led teams, I’ve coached leaders, and I’ve been thrown into situations where theory wasn’t going to cut it. I know what it’s like to face a room full of people depending on you to lead—when you don’t feel ready. I’ve seen firsthand what happens when leadership development programs focus on ideas instead of actions. And I’ve seen the difference it makes when you’re actually able to put what you’ve learned into practice. That’s what led me to create Impact Initiative—a leadership development program that goes beyond theory and pushes you to act, grow, and lead in real situations.

Why Traditional Leadership Programs Fall Short

Let’s cut to the chase. Most leadership programs out there are packed with good information, but they miss the mark on real-world application. Here’s what I’ve seen over and over again:

  • Too much theory – Programs overload you with models and concepts but don’t give you the tools to use them when it matters.
  • No real feedback – Without feedback, how do you know if you’re doing it right? You don’t. You’re stuck guessing.
  • No practical challenges – Sitting in a classroom doesn’t prepare you for the real-world complexity of leading a team under pressure.

The result? Leaders walk out with a lot of knowledge but no idea how to implement it, and their teams feel it. That’s where the gap is—application. It’s what turns concepts into real change, and without it, you’re just spinning your wheels.

Real Leadership Development: Focus on Action, Growth, and Experience

The truth is, leadership can’t be learned in a vacuum. It’s about experience, feedback, and continuous growth. You need an approach that values:

  1. Hands-on Learning – Don’t just listen—do. Engage in experiences that allow you to practice leadership, make mistakes, and learn from them. Only then can you truly understand what works and what doesn’t in real situations?
  2. Self-awareness – Leadership starts with knowing yourself. This means recognizing your strengths, weaknesses, and blind spots. Leadership programs need to create opportunities for you to reflect, challenge yourself, and grow. Self-awareness is the foundation for personal and professional growth.
  3. Adaptability – Leadership is dynamic. As the environment, your team, and the world change, so must your approach. Look for programs that teach you how to adapt in real-time, face new challenges, and lead through uncertainty. Great leaders aren’t just prepared for today—they’re adaptable for tomorrow.
  4. Feedback Loops – Feedback is critical. The most effective leaders seek it out constantly because they know it’s the only way to improve. Whether through mentors, peers, or direct reports, creating a culture of feedback ensures leaders are always learning and evolving.
  5. Team Development – A leader is only as good as their team. A great leadership program doesn’t just focus on individual growth—it equips you to develop others, creating a ripple effect of growth and performance across your entire organization.
  6. Diversity and Inclusion – The modern workplace is diverse, and successful leaders need to be prepared to lead across different cultures, perspectives, and personalities. Leadership isn’t just about making decisions—it’s about creating environments where everyone can thrive.

The Bottom Line: Make Leadership Real

If you want to become a better leader—or if you want to develop strong leaders in your organization—don’t settle for programs that stop at theory. Seek out education that challenges you to apply what you learn, pushes you to act, and provides the feedback you need to grow.

Leadership is about more than knowing what to do. It’s about making an impact, creating real change, and guiding your team through whatever comes your way. That takes more than theories. It takes action, self-awareness, and a relentless focus on growth. Invest in yourself, invest in your people, and focus on the kind of leadership development that brings real, lasting results.

Being great at your job doesn't automatically mean you'll be an amazing team leader. Leadership is a whole different ball game that requires a unique set of skills. And while those skills can definitely be developed, they don't magically appear overnight. It takes time, effort, and practice to become a great leader.

Great reminder Christine Hernandez! Often times what I have found in the corporate world is people are promoted into "Leadership" roles based on technical ability without ANY Leadership Development (as you noted here). Then we wonder why they fail when given a team to manage and lead. This happens all the time in #sales. Investing early on in actionable #leadershipdevelopment is key.
