Read time 3 minutes.
A study by Atlassian revealed that the average manager attends 62 meetings per month but considers half of them to be a waste of time.
This?means that the majority of our?leaders are sat in?meetings that run for hours, that can be unproductive, a waste of that precious thing called time and it is leading to frustration, lack of engagement and inefficiencies.?
We need to rip up the idea that a one-hour meetings are going to resolve our issues in hospitality.?
So what’s the solution? The 9-Minute Meeting.
If you want to chat with me about how I help restaurant leaders develop and find new solutions to this, find a time?here? .
Yes, you read that right - 9-minute meetings. It may sound unconventional, but research suggests that shorter meetings can actually increase productivity and lead to better outcomes.?
According to a study conducted by the University of California, Irvine, the average worker is interrupted or switches tasks every three minutes and five seconds. Therefore, it makes sense to schedule meetings that are shorter in duration to avoid losing focus and attention.
Not only do shorter meetings help to maintain focus, but they also encourage your team to come prepared and get to the point quickly.
Shorter meetings help to reduce that time significantly, freeing up valuable hours for more meaningful productive work.
So, what are some example for nine-minute meetings? These could include;
By keeping meetings short and sweet, teams can stay on track and on top of their workload, responsibilities and multiple spinning plates and actually feel good about themselves and achieving their goals.

Here is an example of How to run a 9-minute meeting for??“A Monday Morning Weekly Progress Update”
Minute 1 – Two word check-in (this is a Brené Brown concept).
You?take turns sharing two words that describe how you are feeling that day. We all have the human need to see others and to be seen. The realness connects us.??And if on zoom and a lot of people, these can be added to the chat and so we can circle back if anyone needs support.
Minute 2 – 7 – Celebrate, Shed, Conquer & Help
In this section each person comes prepared with;
领英推荐
Celebrate – What was your win from last week.
Shed – What must you let go of this week, something that isn’t serving you or isn’t making an impact. Or something that you cannot prioritise this week because of other demands.
Conquer – What is the main priority or focus for the coming week, so all our clear on your goal.
Finally though maybe the most important….
I need help on….. – an opportunity to ask for support, guidance or maybe another 9-minute meeting with someone specifically.??What do you need help with to get you to achieve your goal?
8-9 minutes – Round the table summarise and/or anything to add.
NOW for all the cynic’s out there remember; your normal one-hour meeting has only taken 9 minutes, so if you need another 9 minutes, go for your life and take it…you’ll still have 42 minutes left over…..your welcome???
You have the power to;
If you need help with this process or want to know how I actually run my??“1-hour meeting’s called GSD (Get Shit Done)", where I teach you how to focus on deep-dive problem-solving and decision-making that drive inclusivity and diversity of thought.??Why don’t you email me directly on?[email protected] ?and we can have a catch up.
While 9-minute meetings may seem unconventional and even unobtainable they can be highly effective in maximizing productivity and minimizing wasted time. By following this structured approach and focusing on key topics, teams can stay on track and achieve better outcomes.?
What have you got to lose?
P.S. Celebrate, Conquer, Shed is a concept Frances Frei mentions in her book "Unleashed"...well worth the read.
