Stop Using Technology As Your Excuse

I remember a time when we would do mail merges and send out thousands of letters and postcards to engage with our prospects. Some companies still do things the old-fashioned way, with digital mixed in.

If you think back to the time of Jesus (one of the greatest personal brand stories), a legacy was formed with no technology whatsoever. No cell phones, no social media, not even snail mail.

I oftentimes hear clients use technology as an excuse as to why their personal brand is not strong. They say things like:

It is harder to gain trust nowadays.

The competitor pool is too big because of digital.

Customers don't want an experience, let alone a relationship.

All these are thought obstacles in your way of building your personal brand. Customers still want to buy from people they know, like and trust. It has always been difficult to gain trust, separate oneself from the competition and build both an experience that leads to a relationship with customers.

Technology, when used as a tool and not as a requirement, can help your business break through these barriers. But, at the end of the day, if you are not solving problems and showing up for your prospects and customers, all the technology in the world won't impact your bottom line.

I remember one physician I had when I lived in the Midwest. He would answer his own phone if his nurse was gone. Yes, I was able to speak directly with my doctor. He invested in the relationships with his patients, and his practice was very successful.

How are you showing up in your communications? Are you investing in one-on-one relationships with your customers and prospects? Or are you investing in numbers and a vanilla message that strips out your personal branding?

If you had to go "old school", how would your communication change? What would you add or take away? Can you make that modification now, even with the use of technology?

Personal branding is not about you. It is about what your audience gets out of the engagement with you. And that audience does want you to show up and not hide behind technology.

Are you ready to put yourself out there?

Thanks for pointing out that relationship building is a basic aspect of the sales process and while technology is helpful, human interaction in solving the client's problem is crucial. Excellent article, Lisa.

"Personal Branding is not about you" sounds like an oxymoron. Lisa you absolutely right, it's defined by what people experience. We need to be aware of how we engage. ??
