If you're using ChatGPT and haven't updated your privacy settings--you're putting your personal and sensitive information at risk.

OpenAI’s ChatGPT is super helpful whether you’re trying to plan a vacation or supercharge at work. You can even create custom GPTs tailored for specific tasks or functions.
If you’re looking for inspiration on how to use ChatGPT, here are some resources.
However, if you are using ChatGPT and never updated your privacy options, all the data you enter into it can be used to train its model (and therefore is no longer private!). This means that if you upload anything personal or sensitive, like a resume, work material, or anything else — OpenAI has access to and uses it.
From OpenAI’s FAQ:
More information on how OpenAI handles your content is available here.
The good news is you can protect yourself and minimize your privacy risk. But if you don’t take these steps, I would not recommend using ChatGPT and risk exposure of my personal and sensitive information.
Option 1: Turn off your Chat History & Delete Chats
If you turn off your chat history, new chats are deleted from their systems within 30 days - and only reviewed for abuse (not model training). You can find this setting by clicking your profile icon and selecting ”Settings.”
However, any historical chats are not protected. So, if you choose this option, make sure you also delete your chats; otherwise, they will still be used by OpenAI for model training.

The downside to this method is that it impacts the usefulness of ChatGPT. It performs better and is easier to use with history enabled, so this may not be the best option for many people.
Option 2 (do this!): Opt out at the account level
Everyone who uses ChatGPT should opt out.
OpenAI allows you to opt out at the account level from any of your content being used for training. Navigate to https://privacy.openai.com/policies and select “Do not train on my content.”
If logged in, you will get a confirmation email that the request has been submitted. If you aren’t logged in, you can enter your email address and then click the link in the email you receive to initiate the process.
Once submitted, OpenAI will notify you when the request is fulfilled.
Once OpenAI confirms the request has been completed (it took a day or so for me), you can continue to use ChatGPT with peace of mind, knowing you’re protecting your data.
Note: Your content is automatically opted out if you’re using ChatGPT Team or Enterprise plans.
