Stop using 81R .. it doesn't exist!

For those in the electrical power industry, you will probably have realised that Rate?Of?Change?Of?Frequency (ROCOF) has become an increasing issue.

In the “good old days” of large synchronous machines it was?a somewhat lesser importance (although by no means to be ignored) as function simply because the inertia in the system of large synchronous machines tended to limit ROCOF.

However, with the HUGE increase in renewables and inverter based generation, frequency is less “stable” and can change very rapidly …

Hence ROCOF is far more prevalent and topical with new Standards and many a discussion topic at conferences.

BUT in the interests of “professionalism” in our industry, can I ask .. plead .. with you all to :

STOP REFERRING TO 81R!

It simply does not exist!

7F is the correct (professional) Device Number.

I have been unofficially informed that C37.2 is under revision and that the new edition will identify ROCOF as code 7, and not 81. ????

I'm not sure if I agree. I highly dislike when people incorrectly use "There is" or "There's" rather than correctly using "There are". So many people would just say: "There's no more clean cups." Instead of saying "There are no more clean cups." Because if flows easier. I think it's incorrect, but a language evolves. It's wasn't the way it is now 50 years ago, and it won't be the same in another 50. Changing isnt necessarily wrong. If everyone refers to 81R and everyone knows what the other person is referring to, then haven't we reached the goal of having device numbers?
