Stop Using This 4 Letter Word At Work

Using 4 letter words typically don't belong in a workplace culture. However, there is a singular 4 letter word that I have frowned upon my entire business career, never use, and find the most offensive of them all when I hear it.

BOSS.

The word boss comes from the traditional command and control style of management, and suggests individuals or teams need to be told what to do, and demands a level of being submissive to the person in charge.Whenever I hear the word boss used in reference to me, I quickly and respectfully ask someone not to use the term, as people work with me, not for me. Being bossy or being a boss does not magically make you a leader of people. It simply makes you a controlling person in charge only by position and title, and not via earned respect and trust.

Those who are leaders, coaches, and mentors empower people they've hired to independently think, challenge, and bring new ideas to the table. I have worked with some of the best leaders of human beings, along with those who were comfortable in their role of being a boss. What’s the major difference? While bosses can be transactionally successful in the short term, leaders are transformationally significant in the long run and positively impact the lives of others beyond their pocketbook. It's a difference you never forget.

Bosses always speak to the heads of their followers, while authentic leaders appeal to their hearts. It’s almost impossible to be devoted emotionally to a boss, but easy to be spiritually connected with a leader. Why? Bosses motivate by fear, while leaders inspire with love. Which do you think is better, especially now when so many people are working remote and you're not there to watch them?

At the end of the day when it comes to 4 letter words in a workplace environment, I would rather work in a culture inspired by LOVE, than one that is ruled by a BOSS.

How about you? ????
