Stop Thinking of Team as a Noun

Stop Thinking of Team as a Noun

Imagine this: Two teams at the same company, both filled with talented people, both working on critical projects.

The first team starts strong but falters as challenges arise. Miscommunication builds-morale dips. Trust erodes. Progress slows. They meet their deadlines, but just barely—and the results? Mediocre.?

The second team faces the same challenges but thrives. Disagreements spark innovation. Collaboration is seamless. Each team member feels heard, valued, and aligned with a shared vision. They don’t just meet their goals—they exceed them.

What’s the difference? One team views “team” as a static noun—a box checked by assembling talent. The other sees “teaming” as an active verb—a dynamic, ongoing process fueled by deliberate investments from their leader.

The leader of the second team doesn’t leave collaboration or trust to chance. They take specific actions, like creating rituals for open dialogue, recognizing contributions both big and small, and fostering psychological safety where dissenting ideas are welcomed, not feared. They ensure every team member understands their role in achieving shared goals and make space for connection—even during times of high pressure.

This leader knows that “teaming” isn’t automatic. It requires constant nurturing, feedback, and recalibration to keep the team aligned, engaged, and performing at their best.

Why Teaming Matters

Teams today aren’t just larger—they’re more cross-functional and complex than ever before. According to research, the average team now spans multiple departments, geographies, and priorities, making alignment and trust-building even more critical.

  • Leaders often assume that once a team is formed, it will naturally gel and perform. In reality, teams that neglect ongoing investment in trust, collaboration, and alignment risk falling apart under the weight of competing demands.
  • The best teams treat “teaming” as a process, not a one-time event. They continuously revisit how they communicate, align on goals, and address challenges to stay resilient and productive.

How Teaming Drives Results

Teams that actively invest in trust, alignment, and collaboration consistently outperform those that don’t. High-functioning teams are more innovative, resilient, and capable of tackling complex challenges.

As highlighted in the new I4CP report-, the most effective teams leverage precision collaboration and high-quality connections to navigate increasing complexity. This intentional approach to teamwork leads to stronger outcomes and sustained success, even in volatile conditions.

Is your team a noun or a verb?

Take a moment to think about your own team. Is it more of a noun—a static group of talented individuals—or a verb—an active, evolving force driven by trust, alignment, and connection?

If your team feels more like a noun, what’s one small action you could take this week to bring “teaming” to life? Consider hosting a candid conversation about shared goals, introducing a new feedback ritual, or celebrating a recent win.

This is an interesting perspective, Vijay Pendakur, Ph.D. I think another one is to think of team not as a singular, but as a plural, because it contains all the identities of its members, plus a collective one that is formed on the aggregation. So, when we are saying "the team is [adjective]" or "the team is doing [something]", we are talking about multiple simultaneous attributes and actions.

Thanks for this! Making me think.
