Users of the digital world, especially in business have a litany of reasons why a cyber event would not happen them!
- We are too small to be a target!
- We have nothing worth stealing!
- Why would they target us?
The Australian attitude of "she'll be right" is an additional driver!
People often forget, in the business world cyber crime has nothing to do with them.
Most cybercrime is opportunistic.
Targeting you, your business, or your family is a random act, perpetrated by random automated systems controlled by hackers that are, in most cases, learning how to hack.
Apart from making money or causing problems and issues, there is no personal agenda at all.
A cyber attack has absolutely nothing to do with you.
In today's digital world there is a greater probability of a cyber event happening than not.
If you have no protection strategies in place then that probability increases exponentially.
The simple fact that you have a digital presence makes you a target of cybercrime.
Most random targeting is perpetrated on you through your email address.
How they got it is moot. Your email address may have been:
- bought in a list from the dark web.
- It may have been stolen/skimmed from your website.
- It may have been stolen from an organisation that has been exploited.
How they got it is irrelevant. The issue is that they have it and will use it in a random attack on you.
When your receive a phishing email, it often looks like it has come from your power company, the post office, a courier, Netflix, office365 or a bank then you can be sure that you are part of a random attack.
We all need to change our attitudes! We have to change from "it will not happen" to "it could happen".
That simple attitude change reduces the probability of being a victim, significantly.
If you think that you do not have an issue with the security around your business then test it. Search "CareMIT Business security diagnostic tool", do the quiz, and get the report.
I bet you there are areas where you are not as secure as you thought.
