Stop Shaming Chinese..
While the death toll and the affected are on the rise in China (and other countries), what are we, the rest of the world doing?
Novel Corona Virus is an epidemic, Scientists are trying to find the source of the outbreak, Chinese government, the noble doctors, nurses and the healthcare officials are working nonstop to control the spreading and treating people, Construction workers are functioning 24 X 7 to build a new facility to treat the affected, government bodies are taking precautions, locking down cities — neglecting the countries growth and development
While the other countries are facilitating charter flights to bring back their citizens who are staying in China, Quarantine them in isolation to avert spreading the virus in the home country, Airports are tight secured and screening is mandatory for everyone passing through the airports; even though a new news article says there is no scientific evidence that screening will work (https://globalnews.ca/news/6491615/coronavirus-airport-screening-effectiveness/)
These actions are pretty much accurate and correct to prevent since this outbreak is declared a global health emergency by WHO (https://www.bbc.com/news/world-51318246)
But why shaming the Chinese, their food habits and their population?
Yes, Wuhan a China town is the epicenter of this global pandemic, they didn’t handle the situation well in the start. The mayor acknowledged they didn’t release the information quickly (https://www.theguardian.com/science/2020/jan/27/china-coronavirus-who-to-hold-special-meeting-in-beijing-as-death-toll-jumps) but what we see now is a different story. The Chinese government, the officials, healthcare sector and the citizens - all of them are doing their duty precisely, trying their level best to contain the disease outspread and rectify:
But, most of us, the rest of the world, the social media and internet is filled with hate speech and memes on Chinese nationals. to be honest, It’s on a par like racial slurs, color discrimination and harassment
Finger pointing and accusing Chinese that they are the reason for this outbreak, shaming their food habits and treating them as delinquents, penalizing them.. Are we doing the right thing? NO, Not really
It may be fun for those who are not affected, specially the keyboard warriors who take everything light and hilarious. but who are we to judge?
I saw a plethora of memes about Asian food habit shaming and justifying that it is the reason for the global epidemic, even though the source of the novel virus is still not identified. Choosing their own food habit is one’s right. and nobody is entitled to shame it. You may not opt to eat it, but you don’t get to tell what to eat and what not to
Some are very persuasive, saying it’s better people dying, as China is one of the largest populated country. Unless death occurs in your respective family none will feel the pain of the family of the dead. Those deceased may be the sole breadwinner of the family, a loving parent, a sibling, a spouse; yet for these inhumane species, human life is just a number
Others when they see a Chinese, Japanese, Malaysian among them, Make disgusting faces, run away from them, put on their face masks quickly and make the poor souls inconvenient and embarrassed. Most of us do not know to distinguish the Asian faces, hence they humiliate everyone.
My question is what are we going to gain from discriminating? Why are we doing it? It’s a simple basic manners that we should not hurt another human being. Are we doing that? Are we being a responsible human being?
Sadly No;
In my opinion, it’s one of the cheapest trait, an indecent characteristic. Just stop shaming them. They are our fellow people. we are sharing the same world as them. What happened to them can happen to us any day. it is not their fault.
I know what discrimination looks like and what it will do to your confidence level and how it will break you, first hand. That may be the reason I can feel the pain. You may also have met discrimination in any form. but that does not gives you free will to shame others.
Apart from this don’t spread rumors, don’t speculate, don’t penalize!
As we have prevailed from many epidemics in the past, I’m sure we will overcome this.
Until then, stop shaming the victims!
