Stop Resisting Change

We used to frequent a restaurant in the Queen Anne neighborhood of Seattle called Paragon. On their menu, they had Bruschetta, which was a fantastic appetizer. ?In fact, I ordered it as a starter every time we went.

Then, one day, I looked over the menu and noticed the Bruschetta was gone. ?As our server approached, I asked the question, "What happened to the Bruschetta?"

Her reply, "It's gone. Change is good" (in a crisp, high-tempo voice)

Her "change is good" line has stuck with us for 15+ years. ?Anytime something in our household happens that refers to a change, one of us will say to the other, "Change is good," in that same snarky tone she initially said it in.

Even though I was incredibly annoyed at the fact that the Bruschetta was gone, and she chose to say it in that tone, she was right, change is good. ?I was holding on to that menu item because I liked it, but I wasn't venturing out into other areas of the menu that I may have enjoyed. ?To me, that item was comfortable in a restaurant that I was comfortable in, probably at a table I had sat in several times before.

Change is good.

Embracing change in our careers is often met with apprehension, as it disrupts our familiar routines and comfort zones. However, it's crucial to recognize that change can be a catalyst for growth and personal development. In fact, change is an essential part of the journey toward a fulfilling and successful career. Without change, how will we know what is best for us, or how we can truly grow and develop. ?We will only see the world in one way, with one menu item; delicious bruschetta.

When we resist change, we risk stagnation. Sticking to the same routine and refusing to adapt to new circumstances can limit our professional potential. Change forces us to learn, adapt, and evolve, ultimately making us more resilient and adaptable individuals. It can open up new opportunities, broaden our horizons, and lead to unexpected discoveries about our own abilities and interests.

Moreover, change challenges us to step out of our comfort zones. It pushes us to confront our fears and insecurities, helping us build confidence and self-assurance. The discomfort often accompanying change can be a powerful motivator, propelling us to strive for excellence and achieve things we never thought possible.

In a changing job market like today, embracing change is not just beneficial—it's necessary. Technologies advance, industries evolve, and job roles shift. Those who resist change risk becoming obsolete. On the other hand, those who embrace it can stay ahead of the curve, acquiring new skills and staying relevant in their fields.

Change can also lead to increased job satisfaction. It offers the opportunity to pursue your passions and align your career with your values. Whether it's switching to a more fulfilling role, embarking on a new career path, or starting your own venture, change can bring newfound enthusiasm and a sense of purpose to your work.

Change is not something to be feared but embraced in our careers. It challenges us, drives us to grow, and keeps us relevant in a rapidly changing world. By welcoming change, we unlock our potential, discover new opportunities, and ultimately lead more fulfilling and successful professional lives.

Embrace the winds of change, for they can carry you to places you never imagined.

Paragon closed down a few years later. ?Rumor has it that people missed the Bruschetta.
