Stop on Red. Save Lives.

Stop on Red. Save Lives.

During the time it takes for you to read this article, 7 people around the world will be killed in a traffic crash*.?National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recently reported a dismaying 16-year peak in road fatalities in 2021 with an estimated 42,000 deaths in the US alone.

Fatal crashes are not inevitable. In fact, they are largely preventable. Another recent NHTSA study found that high visibility enforcement of traffic safety laws has a positive and quantifiable impact on road safety by reducing dangerous driving behaviors that unnecessarily put road users at risk. ?The study also concludes that automated enforcement is an effective tool that can save lives.

This week is National Stop on Red Week, serving as an important reminder and a powerful declaration to promote awareness of the state of traffic safety and provide the tools to build a safer future with zero traffic-related deaths.

Through the nearly 200 North American red-light safety camera programs that Verra Mobility partners with cities and communities to operate, 85% of drivers who were issued and paid a red-light running violation did not receive a second. This clearly shows that by focusing on risky driver choices that endanger road user, we can make meaningful changes that promote safe behavior.

At Verra Mobility, zero is our goal. We are proud to partner with the?National Coalition for Safer Roads,?Families for Safe Streets,?The Miami Project to Cure Paralysis,?and?Hang up and Drive for this year’s National Stop on Red Week.?Together, we look at red-light running data trends, meet passionate advocates from around the country, and discuss how red-light safety camera systems and other interventions make a significant impact on positive behavior change.
