Hello My Lovely,
Are?you ready to have your mind blown???
This message, this concept, this viewpoint is?going to stick with you!
I’m excited about that…because sometimes we need a slap in the face to open our eyes to what we’re doing to ourselves.
Calm down sister, this is an email.?I’m slapping you with my words, not my hand.
So what do you do when you get the wake up call that something about your patterns of doing life has to change?
The doctor has given you a diagnosis, you’ve had a health scare, or maybe you just can’t get your pants on and know…??
…crap I’ve let myself go even more.?Something has to change.
At the doctor’s office, they have you step on the scale, so it would stand to reason that the scale has some magic guidance to the level of our health.??
When, in reality,?the scale is a tool.??
Contrary to what you may believe, skinny people can be unhealthy.
Their rain barrel may be a different size than yours.
I say that to let you know there is no mystical number that equates to health.?Sure, we have guidelines,?but they’re guidelines, numbers that don’t account for feelings.?
I want you to first and foremost feel vibrant and alive, making the most of the moments of your life.
The journey of improving your health is a process that starts with getting curious, learning some things about yourself.?To connect the dots requires that you use some tools.??
Some of my personal favorites are food logs, journals, wearable tracking devices, a tape measure, and a scale.
All of these are tools and they all have the ability to be used as a weapon against yourself.?
The one that is most commonly and frequently used as a weapon vs. a tool is the?bathroom scale.
When being used as a weapon you’ll do things like:
The number on the scale doesn’t determine health, self-worth, or value to society…
…It’s just super easy to measure.?
And because it’s an action that we have to do every time we walk into a doctor’s office, we’ve wired in this thought that the number on the scale defines who we get to be…
…what we get to have…
…how we must do life…

…what our quality of health is.
When I work with clients, the bathroom scale is really the least favorite of all the tools.?For connecting the dots about what works for your body and what doesn’t, the scale offers the lowest quality of feedback of all the tools.
If your eyes are wide and your cheek is stinging from realizing that, oh my goodness,?you ARE using the scale as a weapon, what do you do now???
Well, now that this has been brought to your attention, there’s a fair chance that when you step on the scale next time you’ll remember my words and you can remember that the number you see?is just one measurement of the actions?you’re consistently choosing to take.
You can?start focusing more on actions.?Being consistent with the actions you’re moving the health needle with.?The actions that support?the lifestyle you want to be living.
Allow yourself to?use a tape measure more than the scale.?
I don’t know that I’ve ever had a client that was happy about unrolling the tape measure and wrapping it around her body.??
In fact, a few just refuse to do it.
But I continue to recommend it and now have?proof of why.
I have a client that over the last year has seen significant changes in inches in her body, but a very minimal drop in the number on the scale.??
I can only explain this to body composition change.
She admits that if she had just been focusing on the scale she would have quit, saying it wasn’t working for her.
The truth is that it is very common to see the number changes on the tape measure before you see it on the scale.
Because she could see the inches come off, she kept going.
And she continues to celebrate the non-scale victories like feeling better, having an improved mood, higher energy levels, and stamina and strength to take on projects that a year ago she would have avoided.
A skill that I’d like you to develop is catching your negative thoughts and asking what you used to measure that negative thought.
Was it the scale, a mirror, a look someone gave you, a story on a loop in your brain??
Whatever it was, ask yourself if it’s possible that you’ve turned what was meant to be a tool into a weapon against yourself.??
And then determine how you will go forward, using this tool as a tool and to stop using it as a weapon.??
Trust me, I know that this will be a challenge.?Using tools as weapons is something that we started doing as teens.?It could be a deeply ingrained habit that you need support in changing.
As your coach, I help you identify the unhealthy patterns and the thoughts that are deeply rooted, keeping those patterns on replay.?Once we find them, we develop healthier habits that work for your body.
