Stop the pressure!

I recently read with interest where USA state and federal authorities are investigating at least 60 fires and explosions traced to gas-lines erupting in the Springfield, Massachusetts area - with one man sadly losing his life and about 25 others injured.

Emergency services were stretched to the limit with so many blazes alight in close proximity to each other at the same time, causing great devastation for many families, their homes and their businesses.

The cause appears to have originated from the gas supplier whereby the gas-lines had been over-pressurised. Essentially too much natural gas was pumped into a section of pipe owned by the gas provider. Additionally, aging infrastructure appears to be a contributing factor in this catastrophe.

According to court findings, this was not the first time that gas-line blasts occurred with this gas provider, with at least three known previous documented instances having taken place.

Hence, many questions need to be asked, including:

  • Who is being held to account?
  • What controls were in place?
  • When will this next happen?
  • Where could this next occur?
  • Why the continuance of these incidents?
  • What are the regulators doing about this?
  • Should the provider keep their license to operate?
  • Could the same happen here in Australia?
  • How can the industry be strengthened?

This recent event adds further plausibility to going off-grid and be disconnected from critical infrastructure that has a potential to cause a devastating effect such as a cyber attack on the PLC / SCADA / controller infrastructure of a major gas utility. This scenario could have the same or a more widespread effect, destroying random houses / businesses across a wide geography, creating a man-made Armageddon!

This subject is certainly something for us all to seriously think about and pro-actively act on here in Australia!!

Here at elasticus we have a vision to see people, companies and communities recover quickly from difficulties, by establishing a form of toughness or elasticity that hold all of us in good stead.
