Stop postponing your dreams (I learned the hard way)

Stop postponing your dreams (I learned the hard way)

We've all been there before. Those moments where we knew what our heart was yearning for, yet we convinced ourselves to wait just a little bit longer. Maybe we thought we needed to finish this part of our lives or career before we could really dive into what we wanted to be doing. Sound familiar?

I found myself caught in this trap, postponing my own life to fulfill some altruistic version of success. You know the one - where we reach the pinnacle of our career, earn a certain amount of money, buy that dream house, or attempt to fulfill our parents' vision for us. I was moving forward with intention, but towards a future I wasn't even sure I wanted to be living.

Let me share a bit of my story with you.

I thought I needed to reach a certain level of income, experience, and prestige before I could do what I really wanted. I was determined to check all the boxes first, only to realize later that the deep levels of burnout and exhaustion I was feeling were directly correlated to how long I "stuck it out" and tried to "push through".

What I hadn't realized was the cost – not just physically, but emotionally and mentally as well. I was starving myself of what I really wanted and needed in my life. I was depriving myself of the joy and pleasure that comes from doing what you love and following a purposeful path forward.

Two critical things were happening in these moments:

  1. I was ignoring my intuition – that inner knowing that was always telling me the next, best path forward. The wisdom from within that told me when something felt off, or when something truly lit my energy up. I was using my head to push through, simply thinking it knew better than my body and spirit did.
  2. I was struggling to connect with purpose in my work. I continued to show up, day after day, working hard and pouring all my energy into projects or tasks where I could no longer see the red thread. I was merely executing, not stopping to hit PAUSE and rethink my path, or to get a better understanding if I could still find deeper purpose in my work, despite the difficult conditions I found myself in.

The result? I struggled, burned out, and eventually quit my job in anger and frustration. And while I have no regrets about the path I forged or the incredible unfolding that took place next, the journey certainly would have been less painful had I taken the time to listen within and reconnect to my own inner voice and purpose before moving forward.

But here's the good news: You don't have to go through the same painful journey. I've got two incredible resources for you this week to help you tap into your intuition and find your purpose:
