Stop Playing the Waiting Game

Stop Playing the Waiting Game

Waiting for an outcome is something we've all experienced, and it can be quite unpleasant. Whether we're waiting for test results, election results, or a new date, the feelings that come with waiting can be excruciating. Waiting, regardless of the circumstances, brings with it a slew of unpleasant emotions such as uncertainty, anxiety, worry, and impatience. As we sit in the space of not knowing, waiting for possible good or bad news can feel draining and exhausting.

  1. Meditate. Finding a type of meditation that speaks to you can help you cope with the stress of not knowing. Researchers discovered evidence that mindfulness, including mindfulness meditation, was beneficial in reducing the stress of waiting in one study.?
  2. Do things that trigger your flow state. Immersive activities that require your complete attention assist you in achieving a flow state. Being in your flow can be both calming and grounding. It also reminds us that life goes on even while we wait. There is food to prepare, essays to write, and artwork to create. The waiting continues, as do these other powerful experiences that remind us that there is more to life than the news we are anticipating.
  3. Create breathtaking experiences. Researchers at the University of California discovered that participants exposed to an awe-inspiring video (a high-resolution video of a sunset) were significantly better able to tolerate the uncertainty of waiting for test results than participants exposed to either a neutral video or a cute video of animals in a study.
  4. Limit the number of times you check your phone or email for a response. Constant checking is exhausting, and when we get into the habit of checking, it becomes a vicious cycle of checking, disappointment, and more checking, as each check holds the promise of some news. Check your email on a regular basis. Set limits on where you will check.
  5. Make an affirmation list. Make a list of words that will help you feel more hopeful and believe in a positive outcome. Say them aloud, then record yourself saying them and watch the video to remind yourself. This can help you avoid worry and maintain a positive attitude.
