Since COVID-19, we’ve seen a massive shift from in-person networking to virtual networking. Even though in-person events have returned, LinkedIn remains the go-to place to network with people you wouldn’t normally have direct access to.
LinkedIn is now the #1 networking tool for professionals, and not using it means missing out on valuable opportunities and falling behind competitors. Building relationships on LinkedIn is crucial. When you invest in relationships, both online and offline, you create opportunities for client acquisitions, partnerships, job offers, and so much more.
With that being said, there is a right way and a wrong way to network on LinkedIn.?
My advice? Treat LinkedIn exactly how you would treat an in-person conversation. Just like in real life, building relationships on Linkedin requires effort and sincerity. If someone shared a story with you in person and you looked them dead in the eyes, gave them a thumbs up, and walked away, that person would probably never talk to you again.?
The same principle applies on LinkedIn.
My preferred way to engage with people on LinkedIn is through commenting. It comes across as more genuine than a salesy DM, and shows that you truly care about what the other person is sharing - key to relationship building.
When you come across a post that resonates with you, avoid a standard response like, ‘great insight!’ and instead leave a comment that sparks a conversation. Encourage an exchange of ideas. Here’s an example:
Post about how I was burnt out from work and took the weekend to unplug?

Bad comment: ??
Bad comment: Love this!
Good comment: "I can definitely relate to the exhaustion you're describing. It's a bold move to disconnect entirely for the weekend in our always-on world. Did you find that stepping away helped your productivity when you returned to work this week?"
Leaving genuine comments means investing the time and effort into doing so. You need to put in the reps to see the return on investment. My advice is to carve out one hour a day and engage with people that are either within the same industry as you or within your target audience. Consistency and quality interactions will set you apart and strengthen your professional network.
Remember, meaningful engagement leads to stronger connections. Don't just comment for the sake of commenting; make an effort to add value to the conversation.
Another key tip is consistency. Regularly interacting with your network keeps you on their radar and helps nurture those relationships over time.
Lastly, always follow up. If someone responds to your comment, continue the conversation. It shows you're genuinely interested and helps build rapport.
In summary, treat LinkedIn networking like in-person networking: be genuine, add value, and be consistent. Your efforts will pay off in the form of stronger professional relationships and greater opportunities.
